Hatchbacks offer immense practicality in an efficient car like package. Recently, with the rise in popularity of sport utility vehicles, automakers have begun to blur the line between cars and SUVs, and many modern hatchbacks now wear rugged styling and offer upright driving positions for a more SUV-like aesthetic. Below, we'll outline seven of the newest hatchbacks on the market here in 2019, a few of which toe the line between car and SUV.

2020 Kia Soul

2020 Kia Soul

The Soul is a prime example of a hatchback that's marketed as an SUV, with Kia even going so far as to categorize it as an SUV on its own website despite the fact that it isn't actually available with all-wheel drive. This doesn't mean that the Soul isn't an excellent vehicle though, and there's a lot to love about the all-new 2020 model. Beyond its new "Stormtrooper" styling, the Soul offers a wide range of efficient powertrains, standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and an array of available safety tech offered on all but the base model. Additionally, the Soul is available in six different trim levels, meaning that it's likely that you'll be able to find one that suits your very specific needs -- and your budget. 2020 Hyundai Venue

2020 Hyundai Venue

As Hyundai and Kia are sister companies, it isn't surprising that the all-new 2020 Venue kind of looks like a shrunken Soul. The Venue is a tiny subcompact crossover, but like the Soul, it lacks available AWD, leading us to include it on this list of hatchbacks. Five inches shorter than the subcompact Hyundai Kona, the Venue is aimed at other small crossovers like the Mazda CX-3 and the Nissan Kicks. Under the hood of the Venue is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder putting out just 121 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual is available, although the optional CVT will certainly be the more common choice. Combined fuel economy is said to come in at around 33 miles per gallon -- a respectable figure. Naturally, buyers will likely cross-shop the Venue with Hyundai's own Kona, so it's worth mentioning that the Venue offers almost the same cargo capacity as the Kona behind the second-row seats. Fold down the second rows though and the Venue's smaller size becomes clear, as the Kona offers around 15 additional cu ft. of room. An 8-in touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility is standard. Find a Hyundai Venue for sale

2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback

2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback

The Toyota Yaris is a rebadged Mazda2, which is Mazda's subcompact offering sold in markets outside of the U.S. Offered as a sedan for the past several model years, Toyota is introducing the Yaris hatchback for the 2020 model year. A 7-in infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay comes standard. Inside, the Yaris is all Mazda aside from the Toyota badge on the steering wheel. We view this as a good thing though. While Toyota and Mazda offer equally high-quality interiors, Mazda's designs and materials are a little more upscale and a little more premium than Toyota's. The new 2020 Yaris Hatchback should go on sale toward the end of 2019. Pricing is aligned with that of the sedan's, so expect to pay a little under $18,000 out the door, especially given that there's really only one trim level and options and packages are kept to a minimum. Find a Toyota Yaris for sale

2019 Mazda3 Hatchback

2019 Mazda3 Hatchback

The newly-redesigned Mazda3 offers a luxury car experience at a mainstream price. As with past generations, both sedan and hatchback versions are offered. Further indicative of the vehicle's push upmarket is that AWD is now available, which is great for drivers in snowy climates. Under the hood is the same 2.5-liter 4-cylinder found in the outgoing model, putting out 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, and paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. If you want AWD, you'll have to opt for the automatic. Front-wheel-drive models earn 30 mpg combined, while AWD nets 28 overall. As it's a little more versatile, the Mazda3 hatchback costs a little more than the basic sedan, coming in at $24,495 to the sedan's $21,895. In turn, though, the hatchback offers more standard equipment, with automatic climate control, simulated leather seats, loads of active safety tech, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay all included in that base price. Not only is it one of the newest hatchbacks on the market, but the new Mazda3 is probably one of the best overall values on the market today, especially if it's style, refinement and practicality you're after. Find a Mazda3 for sale

2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

While the Corolla sedan is all new for the 2020 model year, Toyota rolled out a new Corolla hatchback as a 2019 model. In addition to more practicality, the Corolla Hatchback is available with a 6-speed manual transmission, which is something you won't find in the sedan. The Corolla Hatchback's manual offers smooth shifts and a unique rev-matching feature that makes it easy -- and fun -- for anyone to drive, including those just learning to drive a stick. Beyond that, the Corolla Hatchback is available in sporty XSE trim that when ordered in the vibrant "Blue Flame" exterior color and paired with the optional rear spoiler and the aforementioned 6-speed manual, makes for a fun little hatchback. Beyond aesthetics, the Corolla Hatchback offers an array of active safety features and a standard 8-in touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, although Android Auto is still unavailable. Find a Toyota Corolla Hatchback for sale

2019 Hyundai Veloster

2019 Hyundai Veloster

The funky Veloster gets a full redesign for 2019. While it still offers its unique 3-door arrangement with one big coupe like door on the driver's side and two doors on the passenger side, the Veloster's styling has matured inside and out. Three powertrains are offered. On the base end is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder making 147 hp. The Veloster Turbo gets its motivation from a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making 201 hp. Finally, a new addition to the Veloster lineup is the high-performance Veloster N, which counts the Volkswagen Golf GTI as its closest competitor. The N makes use of a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder putting out 250 hp, or 275 if you opt for the optional Performance Package. Manual and automatic transmissions are available on 2.0 and Turbo models, while the N comes exclusively with a 6-speed manual. Features available throughout the Veloster range include a generous offering of standard and optional active safety features, heated seats, wireless charging and a sunroof. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard. Find a Hyundai Veloster for sale

2018 Nissan Kicks

2018 Nissan Kicks

While it's marketed as an SUV, the Kicks' lack of available AWD leads us to view it more as a high-riding hatchback than a utility vehicle, as is the case with the Kia Soul mentioned above. This isn't a bad thing though, as the Kicks offers an upright driving position and surprisingly nimble handling characteristics. Introduced for the 2018 model year, the Kicks uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine making 125 hp and 115 lb-ft of torque. Modest figures, but they allow for a fuel economy rating of 33 mpg overall. The Kicks carries a starting price of just under $20,000 and tops out at around $22,000, meaning that moving up from the base S trim to a better-equipped SV or SR model doesn't come at too high of a cost. Automatic emergency braking and a 7-in touchscreen infotainment system are standard, while Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with blind spot monitoring and a digital instrument display enter the picture with the SV trim. The top of the line SR adds LED headlights, a surround-view camera, and more, while a Premium package adds heated seats, simulated leather and a Bose audio system. Find a Nissan Kicks for sale
