With the ever-growing popularity of high-riding sport utility vehicles, old school station wagons have largely fallen out of favor here in the United States. This isn't because wagons aren't great, what they lack in ride height, they make up for with smooth driving characteristics and ample cargo space. That said, there just aren't a lot of wagons left, so here we've rounded up a list of all of the new wagons you can buy in today.

Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is based on the Golf Sportwagen, which is a stretched and elongated version of the basic Golf hatchback. Aimed squarely at the Subaru Outback, the Alltrack offers standard all-wheel drive and increased ride height when compared to the basic Sportwagen. VW's interiors are exceptional, and the Alltrack's is no different, with a flat-bottomed steering wheel, a center stack that's tilted slightly toward the driver and available brown leatherette seating surfaces. Powering the Alltrack is a turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder making 168 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, each trim, from the base S to the range-topping SEL is available with a 6-speed manual transmission. VW's fast-shifting dual-clutch 'DSG' is offered as well.

The Alltrack returns 21 miles per gallon in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg in combined driving with the manual transmission, and 22 mpg city/30 mpg hwy/25 mpg combined with the DSG. Pricing for the Alltrack is a little steep, starting out at just under $28,000 and reaching around $36,000 in fully-loaded SEL form. Find a Volkswagen Golf Alltrack for sale

Subaru Outback

Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback is perhaps the most popular wagon on the road today. Buyers trust it for its standard AWD, great safety features, good fuel economy and practical design. The Outback will be all-new for the 2020 model year, and gains features like an available 11.6-in infotainment screen and a new performance-oriented variant in the form of the Outback XT, which comes with a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The new Outback also maintains its status as one of the safest vehicles on the road, offering Subaru's suite of active safety features, which it refers to as EyeSight, as standard across all trim levels. The suite includes features like lane-keeping assist with lane centering, a "DriverFocus" system that monitors driver fatigue, automatic emergency braking that works in both forward and reverse, blind spot monitoring, and a head up display.

Pricing for the new Outback has yet to be announced. Expect it to start in the mid- to high-$20,000 range and reach close to $40,000 in fully-loaded XT form. Find a Subaru Outback for sale

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon

While competitors BMW and Audi have both dropped the wagon versions of their midsize sedans from the US market, Mercedes-Benz soldiers on with the much-loved E-Class Wagon. Offering tons of cargo space along with a high-powered, special-order-only AMG variant, the luxurious E-Class Wagon is in a league of its own. The basic E450 Wagon comes standard with AWD and a 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 making 362 hp, which is enough to propel it from 0-to-60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. Pricing is steep though, and the E450 starts at about $65,000.

If you need even more crazy in your life, take a look at the AMG E63 S Wagon, which starts at an eye-watering $110,000. With 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque on tap from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, the E63 S Wagon sprints to 60 in a blistering 3.4 seconds. Here in 2019, out of all the new wagons on sale, nothing beats the AMG E63 S. Find a Mercdes-Benz E-Class for sale

Volvo V60 & V60 Cross Country

Volvo V60 & V60 Cross Country

The V60 is Volvo's compact wagon based on the S60 sedan. It's available in two different body styles. The regular V60 is your run-of-the-mill sedan-based wagon, and offers front-wheel drive or optional AWD. Two engines are offered. In the lower-end "T5" model is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder making 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T6 makes use of a similar 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that is in this case both turbocharged and supercharged, resulting in an output of 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both are paired with an 8-speed automatic. The T5 is offered with FWD or AWD, while the T6 is AWD only. Pricing for the regular V60 starts at around $39,000 and reaches just over $60,000 in fully-loaded Inscription trim.

Joining the lineup for 2020 is the V60 Cross Country, which comes with standard AWD and 8.4 inches of ground clearance, or nearly three more than the standard V60. The V60 Cross Country adds to its rugged aesthetic with plastic body cladding, hill-descent control and an off-road driving mode. Find a Volvo V60 for sale

Volvo V90 & V90 Cross Country

Volvo V90 & V90 Cross Country

Like the V60, the V90 wagon is offered in both standard and high-riding Cross Country form. Both use the same range of engines. T5 models use a turbocharged 4-cylinder making 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the T6 adds a supercharger to the mix for a total output of 316 hp and 295 lb-ft. Like in the V60, both engines come paired with an eight speed automatic. Optional extras include a self-leveling rear suspension, a Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system, heated rear seats and a litany of active safety features.

Pricing for a base V90 starts at $51,450, while the V90 Cross Country carries just an $1,100 premium, coming in at $52,550. A loaded V90 reaches about $70,000, while a loaded V90 Cross Country comes in a few thousand dollars higher. Find a Volvo V90 for sale

Audi allroad

Audi allroad

While the original Audi allroad offered back in the early 2000s was a maintenance and reliability nightmare based on the Audi A6, the current-generation Allroad is based on the A4, and should offer a much more reasonable ownership experience. The Allroad of today uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Available features include Audi's virtual cockpit system, a Bang & Olufsen 19-speaker sound system, a head up display, a 360-degree top-down camera system, and radar cruise control with stop and go, along with all of the other active safety features you'd expect in a new vehicle. Compared to its biggest competitor, the Volvo V60 Cross Country, the Allroad is bigger, offering 58.5 cu ft. of space with the second row folded flat, almost 8 cu ft. more than the V60. The 2019 Audi allroad starts at $46,695 and tops out at just over $59,000 in loaded Prestige guise. Find an Audi allroad for sale

Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Based on the midsize XF sedan, the XF Sportbrake combines the handling prowess of a sport sedan with the long-roof body style of a wagon. Unlike many of the other vehicles on this list, the XF doesn't try to fit into a crossover image by offering increased ride height and extra body cladding; Like the E-Class, this is a traditional sport-sedan derived wagon, through and through. The XF is offered with two different powertrains, both of which are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The 30t model comes with a 2.0-liter supercharged 4-cylinder putting out 300 hp, good enough for a 0-to-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds. Opt for the more potent S model -- which comes with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 making 380 hp -- and that figure drops to 5.3 seconds. Regardless of which engine you choose, the XF Sportbrake doesn't come cheap, and carries a starting price of about $66,000 while topping out at over $81,000 when fully loaded. Find a Jaguar XF for for sale

Buick Regal TourX

Buick Regal TourX

The Regal TourX probably isn't what you think of when you think of Buick. The Regal TourX makes use of a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 250 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Offering AWD and an 8-speed automatic, the Regal TourX returns 21 mpg city/29 mpg hwy/24 mpg combined. Three trim levels are offered: base, Preferred and Essence, the latter of which brings with it a hands-free power lift gate, dual zone automatic climate control, heated front seats with a heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, and a 40/20/40 folding rear seat. Both the Preferred and Essence model come with blind spot monitoring with rear parking sensors, but only on the Essence are automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist made available. Altogether, the Regal TourX is an adventure oriented wagon offered by a traditionally not-very-adventurous brand.

The base Regal TourX starts at $29,995 and reaches about $43,000 before factoring in any and all current rebates offered by Buick at the time of purchase, of which there are almost certain to be several, which should serve to bring the out-the-door price of a loaded TourX down to under $40,000. Find a Buick Regal TourX for for sale
