The 8 Coolest Character Cars From Emmy-Nominated Shows

The Emmy Awards are right around the corner, and while some may be fawning over the glitzy red carpet arrivals, some of us are blissfully remembering some of the coolest cars from our favorite nominated shows.

From Caddys to Cherokees, Caprices to Continentals, the rides are retro, rustic (well, maybe just a few), and worthy of the highest auotmotive accolades. Ya hear that, Academy?

1990 Chevrolet Caprice

"Ozark"

No-frills, practical and pretty forgettable, save for the person behind the wheel (Julia Garner as the gritty, unflinching Ruth Langmore), the nearly 30-year-old Caprice is ridiculously suited to the climate of "Ozark" — somewhat bleak, a little mysterious, and yet entirely functional. This sedan was all business — a more aerodynamic look than previous models, and that classic Chevrolet grille. Steely, strong and unapologetic. Would Ruth drive anything less? 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

"Barry"

In one of the most unforgettable episodes of this celebrated dark comedy, nominees Bill Hader and Stephen Root take a crazed jaunt in a staid Jeep Grand Cherokee. This perfectly rugged, uncomplicated SUV is just right for two guys on the hunt for a pint-sized ninja child who may or may not be of this world. In the crazy that ensues, the Cherokee just does its thing in its unfussy way. Sometimes, an off-the-radar ride is the perfect way to hide in plain sight — especially when you’re evading the police, real life or a child warrior hot on your heels. Find a Jeep Grand Cherokee for sale

1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car

"Schitt’s Creek"

When the Rose family (led by Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy) decided to bite the bullet and buy a car, they choose a beauty and a beast. The Lincoln Continental Town Car measures an achingly long 233 inches, and weighs in at about 4600 pounds. Oof. This massive vehicle was the last of the huge American sedans (by the late 70s, carmakers were making them smaller and sportier), and boy, does this ride feel mega. Potholes peppering the road? You won’t feel them in this behemoth. Given the Rose family’s penchant for emanating glamour, the showrunners hit the jackpot in bringing on the Continental to add some gaudy goodness to this clever comedy. 2014 Mercedes-Benz S 550 AMG Sport

"Black-ish"

Pretty, classy, and sporty to boot. We could go on and on about the 2014 Mercedes S-Class — how it’s super sublime to drive, and has the kind of interior that makes you never want to leave — but we also know it sported a high, high price tag when it debuted five years ago. When nominee Anthony Anderson’s character, Dre Johnson, rolls up in one of these slick luxury sedan, we can’t help but pine for one ourselves. Powerful yet quiet, stately yet slick, it just pops on TV. And when you add in the comedic prowess of Anderson and a talented ensemble cast, you get great TV that just pops and pops and popsFind a Mercedes-Benz S-Class for sale

2018 Chevrolet Suburban

"Veep"

Given her status, there’s no way Selina Meyer (former vice president and, briefly, ex-POTUS) is driving herself anywhere. So it’s not too surprising her team schlepps her around in a 2018 Chevrolet Suburban. It’s fairly discreet, wholly utilitarian and gets the job done. In the final season, Meyer has set up an exploratory committee for an election run. Her gaggle of cohorts includes the whip-smart and the wonky, all piled into this roomy 9-seater. Its top-notch safety features (lane-keeping assist and rear cross-traffic alert) make it a solid choice for a VIP like Meyer. Plus, it has plenty of room behind its third-row seat for storing, say, a politician’s luggage. Selena had an uphill climb. It’s a good thing she had a little suburban help. Find a Chevrolet Suburban for sale

1973 Dodge Coronet

"True Detective"

Mesmerizing, addictive, and riveting on every level, "True Detective" is the kind of anthology crime drama that gets under your skin. Brimming with suspense, it’s beautifully haunting, thanks to stellar performances (led by award-winning actor Mahershala Ali), TD is made all the more intriguing by its brooding, gritty cinematography — punctuated by the addition of such retro rides as a 1973 Dodge Coronet. Similar in design to the more celebrated Dodge Charger (made famous by "Dukes of Hazzard"), the 1973 Coronet could be purchased as a stately 4-door sedan or a station wagon. It nicely complements Ali’s Wayne Hays peaceful "good cop" character — bold, steely and solid. Find a Dodge Coronet for sale

1998 Suzuki Esteem

"Better Call Saul"

Seems as though cars and BCS are a real thing — from gaudy Hummers to faux wood paneling slapped on a 2002 Honda Odyssey — Saul is stocked with good/bad cars. Our hands-down favorite — the ride that set the scene for the best of the automotive worst — has to be the 1998 Suzuki Esteem. This lemony lemon is both a bucket o’ bolts and an eyesore, made even more horrific by the back passenger red door. It’s outlandish, cruddy and just plain hysterical. Its awfulness is made even better by Saul’s term of endearment — calling it a "steaming pile of cr–." Sure, call Saul, but keep this beater. For reals. Find a Suzuki Esteem for sale

1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Convertible

"The Kominsky Method"

When you craft a series around two classic Hollywood A-listers thriving in their twilight years, you can pretty much bet on one of them driving a classic Benz. As aging acting coach Sandy Kominsky, Emmy nominee Michael Douglas looks right at home behind the wheel of a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE convertible. This full-size luxury car was capable, smartly engineered, and, almost as an afterthought, also quite a looker. Who says your golden years have to be anything less than a shimmering success? Hats off to the living, breathing nominees, and the coolest cars that add dramatic and comedic effect to all of our favorite shows.
