8 Great New Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Under $40,000 for 2019

If you like the idea of an electrified car, but you’ve always thought a new green car was priced out of your reach, you might want to look again at what the market has to offer. The amount of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EV) has grown quite a bit in recent years with a lot of the new offerings competing on price and offering strong value. Whether you’re looking for a practical compact hatchback, a rugged off-roader, or a family sedan, there’s an electrified car out there for you.

Here are eight great new plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles you can get for under $40,000 in 2019. Since electric car tax incentives vary so much depending on where you live and we don’t want to count too much on the federal incentives, the prices below do not include any incentives. They’re just the starting MSRP plus the manufacturer’s destination charges. If you live in a particularly electric car friendly area, these cars can get a lot more affordable.

Chevrolet Bolt

Chevrolet Bolt — $37,495

The Chevrolet Bolt is a fantastic electric hatchback with a very impressive range of 238 miles. Its electric drivetrain also gives it quick acceleration and a quiet ride. Throw in lively handling and you have a practical EV that’s surprisingly fun to drive. If you think the Bolt’s starting price is a little steep, remember that it comes well appointed with a long list of standard features at the base level and even more if you upgrade to the Premier model. Chevrolet Volt

Chevrolet Volt — $34,395

If you like the idea of the Chevy Bolt, but you’re still not sure if you can deal with the potential range anxiety of an EV, consider the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt. The Volt has a great electric range of 53 miles before the gas engine kicks in taking you as far as you need to go between charges. The Volt is more affordable and has the convenience of the gas engine, but it’s not as roomy on the inside as the Bolt. Find a Chevrolet Volt for sale

Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid

Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid — $34,320

There’s an all-electric version of the Honda Clarity, but it’s lease-only and frankly, its short range makes it not that great of an EV. The PHEV variant, however, is a different story. In plug-in hybrid form, the Clarity gets an impressive 47 miles of all-electric range and its smooth ride and upscale cabin make it a pleasant place to be. It’s also a good family car with a back seat that is much more usable than the one in its closest competitor: the Chevy Volt. Find a Honda Clarity for sale

Ford Fusion Energi

Ford Fusion Energi — $35,590

The Ford Fusion Energi is an often forgotten plug-in hybrid sedan. Despite the Fusion being on the chopping block as Ford shifts its focus to SUVs and trucks rather than sedans, the Fusion Energi is still worth a look for anyone looking for a good midsize sedan that’s super efficient. It has an electric range of 20 miles and the interior is spacious and comfortable with a good infotainment system making the Fusion Energi a well-rounded PHEV sedan. Find a Ford Fusion for sale

Nissan Leaf

Nissan Leaf — $30,885

The Nissan Leaf was one of the very first mass-market EVs when it first came out. Now in its second generation, this electric hatchback is more compelling than ever. The range on the base model is 151 miles and that range can go all the way up to 226 miles if you upgrade to the new Leaf Plus. If what you’re looking for is just a practical electric hatchback at an affordable price, the Leaf is a strong green car value. Find a Nissan Leaf for sale

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid — $35,970

Subaru’s first-ever plug-in hybrid is a winner with the efficiency of a hybrid without compromising the off-road charms and capabilities of a Subaru. It might seem pricey for a small Subaru, but the Crosstrek Hybrid comes loaded with a ton of standard features plus a few options you can only get on the hybrid like a heated steering wheel. Thanks to standard all-wheel drive, the Crosstrek Hybrid is easily the most off-road capable car on this list. Find a Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid for sale

Hyundai Ioniq

Hyundai Ioniq — $26,270-31,235

You see two prices listed above because the Hyundai Ioniq is available as both an EV and a PHEV. The PHEV is the more affordable of the two, but starting at just over $30,000, the EV is also a great value proposition. The Ioniq EV has a range of 124 miles and the PHEV can go 29 miles on the electric battery before the gas engine kicks in. A few perks that are shared by all Ioniq models are a roomy cargo area and the outstanding UVO infotainment system, which is one of our favorites in the industry.  Find a Hyundai Ioniq for sale

Kia Niro

Kia Niro — $29,495-$39,495

Much like the Ioniq, the Kia Niro is available as a conventional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and an EV and the prices you see above are for the PHEV and EV, respectively. This subcompact crossover has excellent safety scores and a roomy, upmarket interior that you might be surprised to see in a Kia. The PHEV can go 26 miles on electric power alone and the EV has an impressive range of 235 miles. Find a Kia Niro for sale
