8 Great Used Cars Under $20,000 for 2019

Buyers with $20,000 to spend on a car have quite a few options on the used market. At this price point, it’s a good rule of thumb to target vehicles between three and five years old, as most have depreciated to the point where they offer good value, while still including many of the features buyers look for here in 2019. Here we’ll outline several used cars great for a budget of $20,000, most of which are around five years old or newer.

2017-2018 Mazda3

2017-2018 Mazda3

A brand new Mazda3 starts at around $18,000 for a sedan or $20,000 for the hatchback, so buyers are able to find both new and gently used Mazda3s for $20,000 or less. Buying new means you likely won’t be able to afford features like a sunroof and a navigation system, or driver-assistance features like radar cruise control and lane-departure warning, but it will afford you a full manufacturer’s warranty for added peace of mind. Buying used opens you up to a variety of features and upscale trim levels, but without the full balance of a factory warranty. Regardless, the Mazda3 offers styling, handling and overall refinement superior to that of your average compact sedan. Additionally, the Mazda3’s available hatchback body style offers great practicality while maintaining the vehicle’s attractive lines. There are currently over 1,000 examples of both the 2017 and 2018 Mazda3 hatchback and sedan listed on Autotrader for around $20,000 or less. Find a Mazda3 for sale

2015-2018 Volkswagen GTI

2015-2018 Volkswagen GTI

It’s hard to beat a Volkswagen GTI. Ask anyone who’s ever owned one and they’ll tell you that the GTI is one of the best overall vehicles on the market. Thanks to its potent 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and either a smooth shifting 6-speed manual or a lightning-fast 7-speed automatic with paddle shifters, the GTI is a hoot to drive. Additionally, the GTI and the humbler Golf on which it’s based on, offers an interior with an upscale design and excellent fit and finish. Finally, the GTI’s hatchback body style is immensely practical, capable of swallowing a bike or two, an office chair, houseplants — just about anything. Overall, the GTI sits at the confluence of price, practicality and performance, and right now on Autotrader, buyers have over 700 2015-2017 used GTIs to choose from for $20,000 or less. 2016-2017 Honda Accord

2016-2017 Honda Accord

While an all-new Honda Accord was introduced for 2018, the outgoing model, sold from 2013 through 2017, is readily available for under $20,000, and buyers currently have thousands to choose from on Autotrader that fit the bill, many of which are coupe and hybrid models. Filter down to display only updated 2016 and 2017 models, and there are still over 1,000 viable options. Additionally, buyers can choose from a 4-cylinder or a V6 model, of which there are close to 300 listed. The basic 4-cylinder Accord puts out 189 horsepower and returns over 30 miles per gallon in combined driving. Opting for the V6 gets you a potent 278 hp and an undeniably quick 5.7-second 0-to-60 mph time. The Accord Hybrid is a great option for fuel-conscious shoppers expecting to put a lot of miles on their Accord, as it returns 45 mpg combined. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were both available on the 2016 and 2017 Accord, as was a great array of active safety technology, including lane-departure warning and blind spot monitoring. No matter how you slice it, the 2016-2017 Honda Accord is a great midsize sedan offering, and with how many are available for under $20k, it’s a great value as well. Find a Honda Accord for sale

2014-2019 Ford Fiesta ST

2014-2019 Ford Fiesta ST

The Ford Fiesta ST is another affordable car that offers buyers a lot of extras for not a lot of money. Starting with a relatively tame, unassuming, Fiesta 4-door hatchback, the ST trim adds to the equation a turbocharged 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine putting out an impressive 180 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Along with this excellent powertrain, buyers get a sport suspension, 17-in wheels, Recaro sport seats and an aggressive body kit. As subcompact cars have fallen out of favor with consumers as of late thanks to sustained low gas prices and a preference for SUVs, buyers can pick up a used Fiesta ST for cheap, with close to 600 currently listed on Autotrader for under $20,000. 2017-2018 Hyundai Elantra

2017-2018 Hyundai Elantra

With a starting price of just over $18,000 when new, buyers have their choice of just about any trim level in the Elantra lineup for $20,000, especially if they’re willing to consider used examples. Three different 4-cylinder engines are available, making between 128 and 201 hp, along with three different transmissions: a 6-speed manual, a traditional torque-converter 6-speed automatic and a 7-speed dual clutch automatic. Many Elantras also from this era come equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability. Buyers looking for the ultimate value will want to look to the Elantra’s Limited trim, which offers a full array of driver-assistance features along with heated leather seats and an Infinity-branded premium audio system. There are currently over 850 2017 or 2018 Elantra Limiteds to choose from, along with thousands in other trim levels. Find a Hyundai Elantra for sale

2018-2019 Toyota Camry

Few family sedans offer a more compelling package than the Toyota Camry, and examples from the Camry’s latest generation, just released in 2018, can be found for right around $20,000. This assumes buyers are willing to accept a 4-cylinder model, as the V6 and Hybrid models have yet to depreciate down to the $20,000 range. Still, any used 2018 or 2019 Camry will feel virtually brand new. Four-cylinder Camry models are offered in five different trim levels, L, LE, SE, XLE and XSE. L is the base model, the SE wears a sporty bodykit and the XLE adds luxury features to the basic LE, while the XSE adds features to the sporty XSE. Of the 2018-and-newer Camry models listed on Autotrader for under $20,000, most are your basic LE and SE trims, but rest assured that either one offers a standard touchscreen infotainment system, along with a great array of standard active safety features, like automatic high beams, radar cruise control and automatic emergency braking. If you’re looking for a nicer trim level, consider an older 2014-2017 model in a higher trim XLE or XSE trim level, of which there are currently over 1,000 listed on Autotrader; over 200 of which come equipped with a V6 engine. 2014-2016 Kia Cadenza

2014-2016 Kia Cadenza

Believe it or not, there’s a modern luxury car out there for those with a budget a $20k. The first-generation Kia Cadenza launched in the United States for the 2014 model year and was sold through 2016. Similar to the equally value-oriented Hyudnai Azera, the Cadenza is a mid- to full-size sedan offering standard Nappa leather seats, a dual-pane sunroof, a heated and ventilated driver’s seat, a heated passenger seat and available heated rear seats. Additional available features included a surround view monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, along with a stately looking white interior package, available only on fully-loaded examples. This is remarkable in that these aren’t features typically found on affordably priced used cars, yet the Cadenza offers them, and at a great price. The Cadenza is front-wheel drive only, and is powered by a 3.3-liter V6 putting out 294 hp. When new, the 2014-2016 Cadenza cost between $36,000 and $45,000, but buyers can now find one for under $20,000 with relative ease, as there are currently over 400 listed on Autotrader that fit within our budget.
