Affordable Used Electric Vehicles for 2020

We’re living in the era of the electric vehicle. EVs have been mainstream for about 10 years now, and many earlier models have now depreciated into relatively attainable used car territory.

Here, we highlight five affordable used EVs available for close to what you’d expect to pay for a similarly sized combustion-engine car.

2011-2017 Nissan Leaf

2011-2017 Nissan Leaf

The Leaf was one of the first mass-market EVs. It debuted for the 2011 model year and enjoyed a few years as the only affordable, economical full EV on the market. Early models were rated by the EPA to have a maximum range of 73 miles per charge, although this number crept up slowly over the years and by 2016 had reached a maximum of 107 miles in upper-trim SL and SV models. A second-generation Leaf came out for the 2018 model year. There are more than 1,000 first-generation Leafs listed for sale on Autotrader, a few hundred of which are offered for $10,000 or less. 2017-2019 Chevrolet Bolt

2017-2019 Chevrolet Bolt

The Bolt is one of General Motors’ most compelling vehicles. On sale since the 2017 model year, the Bolt is a subcompact hatchback with a range of more than 200 miles per charge — double the range of any other vehicle on this list. Given that, and given its relative modernity, a used Bolt will carry a higher price tag than the other vehicles on this list, but we feel that the range bump is well worth the cost. Factoring in the included $7,500 federal tax credit, pricing for a new Bolt ranges from the low-$30,000 to high-$30,000 range. Things get a little more affordable when you look to the used market. There are currently about 30 used Bolts listed on Autotrader for $20,000 or less, and many of them come with fewer than 50,000 miles on the odometer. Find a Chevrolet Bolt for sale

2014-2018 Fiat 500e

2014-2018 Fiat 500e

The Fiat 500e first went on sale in the U.S. for the 2014 model year, and it was discontinued after 2018. The 500e offers a maximum range of 87 miles between recharges — not bad for a city car. While it’s about the smallest and most spartan full EV you’ll find, a used Fiat 500e is also the biggest bargain in the segment. This is because it’s effectively the perfect storm when it comes to depreciation. Given that they’re laden with tax credits, EVs tend to lose their value quickly. Combine that with Fiat‘s low brand recognition in the U.S. and the limited appeal of microsized hatchbacks, and Fiat 500e models have seen their values drop immensely within just a few years of being sold new. The 500e carried an MSRP of over $30,000, and it’s now possible to find low-mileage used examples for under $7,000. Find a Fiat 500e for sale

2014-2018 BMW i3

2014-2018 BMW i3

BMW‘s entry into the compact hatchback segment is the i3. Unlike the other vehicles on this list, the i3 is rear-wheel drive, and it really embraces weirdness. In addition to bold styling inside and out, the i3 has rear-hinged doors for accessing the back seat, and it’s offered with a variety of different interior finishes, such as recycled cloth and wool. The i3 came out for the 2014 model year, and early examples are now available for as little as $10,000 — assuming you’re able to tolerate a fully electric example with a driving range of just 81 miles. Opting for a used i3 with the available gas-powered range extender sees the price increase slightly, although it’s still possible to find one for under $15,000 with fewer than 50,000 miles. Find a BMW i3 for sale

2015-2018 Kia Soul EV

2015-2018 Kia Soul EV

While it isn’t as common as the other vehicles on this list, the Soul EV remains a great option when it comes to affordable used EVs. The Soul is a quirky, boxy hatchback. Though its footprint categorizes as a subcompact, its squared-off dimensions give it cargo space on par with many vehicles that compete a segment up in the compact class. In EV form, the Soul boasts a 93-mile electric range, and the battery can be charged up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes if you use a fast-charging DC port. Like many used electric vehicles, the Soul EV experiences fast depreciation, and it’s possible to find a used one for under $11,000 with fewer than 50,000 miles. Right now, there are about 130 Soul EVs on Autotrader. Find a Kia Soul EV for sale
