10 Best Midsize Cars of 2020

Drivers looking for a practical, well-rounded car at a good value should definitely consider a midsize sedan. This segment is full of strong choices that offer comfort, efficiency, the latest technology, and even a little fun. Here are the best midsize cars for 2020.

2020 Honda Accord

1. Honda Accord — 4.8/5 — $24,020

The Honda Accord has always been a midsize sedan that simply does everything well. That reputation is unchanged in 2020. The Accord combines sleek styling, a roomy, comfortable interior, and a fun-to-drive character that few of its classmates can match. It’s also great on gas, especially if you go with the super-efficient Accord Hybrid which comes in at a price point that may surprise you. If you prefer to row your own gears, the Accord is the only car on this list available with a manual transmission. Find a Honda Accord for sale

2020 Hyundai Sonata

2. Hyundai Sonata — 4.6/5 — $23,600

The Hyundai Sonata is all-new for 2020 bringing a huge update that makes it more competitive with the top players in this class. On top of its edgy, unique styling on the outside, the Sonata has a roomy, premium cabin on the inside that you might not expect in a Hyundai. You get tons of standard safety and infotainment technology plus interesting available features like a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and remote parking assist. There’s no hybrid available for the 2020 model year, but we expect to see one in the near future. Find a Hyundai Sonata for sale

2020 Toyota Camry

3. Toyota Camry — 4.6/5 — $24,425

The safe and reliable Toyota Camry is another stalwart in the midsize sedan segment and continues to be one of the most well-rounded cars in its competitive class. You get your choice of three excellent engines; a frugal base four-cylinder, a brawny V6 (which is getting uncommon in this class), and a very efficient hybrid. The Camry gets a few updates for 2020 making it more competitive including available AWD, standard Android Auto, and a sporty TRD trim serving as the new entry-level V6 model. 2020 Kia Optima

4. Kia Optima — 4.4/5 — $23,390

The Kia Optima is in its final model year with the 2021 Kia K5 on its way to replace it, but the Optima is still a good option for a midsize sedan in 2020. The Optima has an upscale interior, one of the most user-friendly infotainment systems in the business, and a nice, gentle ride. For adding a little fun to your commute, consider the exciting available 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. One of the only downsides of the Optima is subpar fuel economy ratings from the non-hybrid models. Find a Kia Optima for sale

2020 Mazda6

5. Mazda6 — 4.4/5 — $24,100

The Mazda6 has long been the athlete of its class with engaging handling and potent engines, especially the turbocharged option. It also has an especially premium cabin for its price point that’s nicely appointed at all trim levels. While the Mazda6 excels when it comes to spirited performance, we wish it still offered a manual transmission. The rear seats are a little tight and the infotainment system can be frustrating, but the Mazda6 is a good choice if you’re shopping for a sporty, premium sedan on a budget. Find a Mazda6 for sale

2020 Nissan Altima

6. Nissan Altima — 4.4/5 — $24,100

The Nissan Altima benefits from a recent redesign which includes an all-new look and available AWD, but it’s still lagging a bit behind the top players in this segment. We love its comfortable seats, smooth ride, and great fuel economy numbers, but it’s not quite as sporty as some of its rivals above. The interior of the Altima is nice in the upper trims but just okay in the lower trims. This Nissan offers a class-exclusive VC-Turbo variable compression engine which nicely blends strong performance with good fuel economy, but it can’t be combined with AWD. 2020 Subaru Legacy

7. Subaru Legacy — 4.4/5 — $22,745

If you like the idea of an affordable midsize family sedan with AWD, then the redesigned Subaru Legacy is a must-test-drive car. With standard AWD on every trim, the Legacy is ready for just about any road condition you might face. The interior is roomy and comfortable and it has a slick infotainment system, but the trunk is a little small and the handling isn’t as sharp as some rivals. Fuel economy is good for an AWD car and it can get pretty exciting when you upgrade to the turbocharged engine which replaces the outgoing six-cylinder. Find a Subaru Legacy for sale

2020 Ford Fusion

8. Ford Fusion — 4.1/5 — $23,170

The Ford Fusion is on its way to discontinuation, but it still has a few things going for it as it gets towards the end of the line. It’s an athletic driver and offers some strong engine choices and its SYNC 3 infotainment system is very user-friendly. However, it’s fallen behind the competition and doesn’t come with a lot of the same standard safety and infotainment features as many of its rivals. The Fusion has been mostly unchanged since 2013, so you might be better off saving a few bucks on a used model. Find a Ford Fusion for sale

2020 Volkswagen Passat

9. Volkswagen Passat — 4.1/5 — $22,995

The Volkswagen Passat got a facelift for 2020 which helps keep it fresh, but it’s not quite enough to make it really competitive with the best midsize cars. The mid-cycle refresh includes updated styling inside and out and a little more torque from its sole engine option which still returns disappointing fuel economy. The interior is nicely designed but uses some low-rent materials. A few of this VW’s virtues include a roomy trunk and a smooth, comfortable ride. Find a Volkswagen Passat for sale

2020 Chevrolet Malibu

10. Chevrolet Malibu — 4.1/5 — $22,140

The Chevrolet Malibu is certainly not a bad car, but it sits at the bottom of this list because it just isn’t as good as the best cars in this segment. The current generation of the Malibu was very competitive when it first came out in 2016, but it’s since been surpassed by competitors with more features, nicer interiors, and stronger performance. What we do like about the Malibu is its affordable base price which is the lowest on this list and its great fuel economy. These factors combine to make the Malibu a good value choice in midsize sedans. Find a Chevrolet Malibu for sale
