Ah, summer. Time to think about slushies, sprinklers and safety. Sure, you know to slather on sunscreen and to be vigilant about rip currents at low tide, but how about keeping your pets safe? If you're headed out for a road trip, or even just a short jaunt to the nearest watering hole with your pup, you should be thinking about the best pet accessories for keeping Fido secure and smiling.

Just in time for National Dog Day, we've got the top seven items every canine-loving family needs to have in their vehicle to ensure everybody (furry ones included) stay safe this summer.

Dog Car Seat Belt

Dog Car Seat Belt

Even though Rover loves to peek his snout out the window and get some fresh air, he should always wear a seat belt specifically made for dogs.

The AutoWT Dog Car Seat allows your four-legged friend to sit, stand, lie down or get close enough to the window to see out, but not so close that he wants to bolt. Having your pet belted in doesn't just keep your buddy secure, it prevents driver distraction. This seat belt fits most cars, and can be plugged right into the seat belt receptacles. The metal and nylon adjustable straps feature reflective stitching so you won't be fumbling with it on late-night drives, and it's springy material helps prevent jerking if you need to stop short. Phew. $10.99, Amazon.com

Quilted Hammock Car Seat Cover

Quilted Hammock Car Seat Cover

There's no question you love your fuzzy girl, but the fuzz she leaves behind? Not so much. Keep your entire back seat free from muddy paw prints, piercing claws, slobbery kiss marks, and so. Much. Dog. Hair with a car seat cover. This one from Orvis features cushiony, quilted fabric for your canine's all-important comfort, and it's water-resistant, breathable and washable. Installation takes just minutes, thanks to hooks that attach to the front and rear headrests. Orvis' Grip-Tight non-slip backing keeps the cover in place -- along with handles that fit between the seat cushion and backrest -- so your sweet girl won't go sliding all over (she can save that action for when she frisbee-dives at the beach). $149, Orvis.com

Dog Car Freshener

We love sandy, muddy-happy dogs as much as the next gal, but the funky smell that goes with them? Not so much. Topping our pet accessories list is this multipack of animal-friendly car fresheners from One Fur All. With such sweet smelling aromas as evergreen, citrus and lavender, your ride will be smelling sweet in no time. These hanging scents are infused with essential oils (as opposed to cloyingly pungent fragrances) but they also neutralize every kind of odor from your rain-soaked, sandy-headed pooch. $9.99 for a pack of four in assorted scents, onefurallpets.com

Pet Booster Seat

Pet Booster Seat

We get it: Your pint-sized pup wants a little height to see better when riding shotgun, but you need him restrained for safety's sake. Make your bestie more comfortable and give him the lift he craves with a pet booster seat. This one from American Kennel Club is perfect for dogs up to 20 lbs (they have others for bigger dogs), and it fits most standard cars. It measures 14x14x10, is adjustable and is a cinch to fold up. That is, if you can manage to remove the snoozing lump o' love from it. $15.99, shop.akc.org

Pet Ramp

Pet Ramp

For the canine cuties who need a little help jumping into the car (or if we can't -- oof -- lift our fur babies easily) a pet ramp is a great pet accessory for car trips. This UltraLite Bi-fold Pet Ramp allows dogs to safely get up and down with a ton less stress on their joints. It supports up to 200 pounds, but weighs just 10, can be hosed off for a quick cleaning and the unit's solid traction allows your fuzzy friend to securely walk up and down. Also, it has a built-in safety release latch that secures the ramp while being tucked away or carried from car to car. Not quite the red carpet experience your guy surely deserves, but it comes awfully close. $79.99, store.petsafe.net

Dog Kennel

Photo coutesy of Gunner Kennels

Dog Kennel

Car kennels for pets run anywhere from $24 for smaller animals to several hundred for sturdier versions. Although pricier than a lot of models, Gunner Kennels' award-winning G1 crate earned a 5 Star Crash Test Rating from the Center for Pet Safety. It features something called double-wall rotomolded construction, so it's super sturdy and durable. Reviewers posting on Gunner's website hail how heavy-duty it is, while still being easy to carry. Dogs fit snugly in one of these crates, upping the safety factor even more. Cozy, safe, and secure. $499, gunnerkennels.com

Pet First Aid Kit

Pet First Aid Kit

You know better than to leave the house without a First Aid kit tucked into your glove box, right? Well, it's not just your rough n' tumble kids who may get a little banged up on a summertime hike: Rover needs some Rx love, too. The ASPCA suggests keeping the following items on hand in case Tiger gets a nasty bite, a case of the scratches, or any number of pet-related health emergencies:

  • Gauze pads
  • Adhesive tape
  • Cotton balls or swabs
  • A bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to induce vomiting (make sure to check with your vet or animal poison control expert before giving to your pet)
  • Ice pack
  • Disposable gloves
  • Scissors with a blunt end
  • Tweezers
  • OTC antibiotic ointment
  • Oral syringe or turkey baster
  • Liquid dishwashing detergent (for bathing -- think: post skunk attack)
  • Towels
  • Flashlight
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Styptic powder
  • Saline eye solution
  • Your regular vet's contact information as well as local emergency vet clinics in the area you're traveling to

These items can be found at drugstores or any pet-supply store. Tuck them into a waterproof bag and you and your pup will be fully equipped with the must-have pet gear for a happy summer filled with happy travels.
