10 Best Used Hatchbacks Under $10,000

Hatchbacks combine the driving manners of a sedan with the utility of an SUV, making them a great fit for buyers wanting efficient, practical transportation.  Here we’ve highlighted the 10 best used hatchbacks under $10,000.

1. 2015 Mazda3 Hatchback

Mazda is known for offering an elevated experience when it comes refinement and driving dynamics.  In recent years especially, Mazda has been making a push upmarket, offering cars and SUVs with premium design and upscale interiors.  In large part, this started with the third-generation Mazda3, which was sold from the 2014 through 2018 model years.  Like many hatchback vehicles, the Mazda3 hatch has a sedan counterpart; expect to pay a slight premium for the hatchback. 2. 2013 Subaru Impreza

2013 Subaru Impreza

The Impreza’s biggest selling point is its standard all-wheel drive system; one of few small cars to offer it.  Both sedan and hatchback bodystyles are available.  If you’re looking for a used Impreza for around $10,000, we recommend looking for a fourth-generation model, which was offered from 2012 through 2016.  Despite having two more drive wheels than the other vehicles on this list, the Impreza still returns a respectable 36 miles per gallon on the highway. 3. 2015 Honda Fit

The Fit is an economy subcompact hatchback with a premium feel.  Like many of Honda’s models, the Fit comes with a great interior made of high-quality materials.  Its driving dynamics are excellent as well, with many calling the Fit one of the best handling small cars you can get.  Other clever features, like a flat folding front passenger seat, further the Fit’s case as a smart buy.  Look for a 2015 model at the $10,000 mark. 4. 2013 Toyota Prius

2013 Toyota Prius

The Prius’ main selling point is its fuel efficiency.  If you’re looking for a used Prius for under $10,000, look to an example from the car’s third generation, which lasted from the 2012 through 2015 model years.  While Toyota’s other compact car, the Corolla was rated at 29 mpg for the 2013 model year, the EPA rated the Prius at a whopping 48 mpg; quite the advantage.  Additionally, while many don’t realize it, the Prius offers a convenient hatchback design. 5. 2016 Ford Focus

Everyone’s heard of the Focus.  Sold here in the US over three generations starting in the year 2000, the Focus was actually discontinued after the 2018 model year, as Ford has committed to an increased emphasis on SUVs.  The Focus is offered in sedan and hatchback body styles, and it’s not hard to find one for around $10,000, with loads of options out there. 6. 2017 Kia Soul

The Soul looks like an SUV, but its lack of available all-wheel drive leads us to categorize it as a hatchback.  Either way, its boxy proportions mean it can swallow more cargo than you’d expect for a vehicle with such a small footprint, and the Soul offers 24 cu ft. of space behind its second row.  Its funky styling means it’s also a little more fun than your average sedan-derived hatchback as well.  Look for a 2017 model, which gets you some updates over previous years. 7. 2017 Chevrolet Sonic

2017 Chevrolet Sonic

One of the newer vehicles you’ll come across in a search for hatchbacks under $10,000, the Sonic is a subcompact offered by Chevrolet in both sedan and hatchback bodystyles.  What we like is that 2017-and-newer models come with a standard 7.0-in infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.  Beyond that, assuming you find one that’s been cared for, a used Sonic makes for sporty, practical four-wheel transportation. 8. 2011 Volkswagen GTI

The GTI is a performance-oriented premium hatchback.  While an all-new eighth-generation GTI is set to go on sale soon, early versions of the sixth-gen GTI can now be had for around $10,000.  Set your search on the 2010-2014 model years and you’ll have plenty of options at our desired price point.  Each one will come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine putting out 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch automatic.  Find a Volkswagen GTI for sale

9. 2012 Honda Insight

The Insight is Honda’s answer to the Prius.  While the first-gen Insight was an experimental two-door model, the second-gen version, sold from 2010 through 2014, was more traditional.  Shaped and styled similarly to the Prius, the second-gen Insight was rated at 40 mpg combined by the EPA.  That’s well short of the Prius, which was rated at 48 mpg for the 2011 model year, but given this, you’ll pay a little less for an Insight. 10. 2014 Hyundai Elantra GT

The Hyundai Elantra GT is a value-packed compact hatchback based on the Hyundai Elantra sedan.  It offers four passenger doors and a large rear hatch opening.  It has plenty of cargo room and a more stylish design than the sedan, and Hyundai has engineered it for sportier handling as well.  Power comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 173 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque.
