Best Used Subcompact SUVs Under $10,000

Looking for a pint-sized used SUV at an affordable price?  You’ve come to the right place.  Here we’ll highlight 8 used subcompact SUVs available for around $10,000.

1. 2014 Kia Soul

The Soul is probably the quirkiest vehicle on this list.  While it’s only available with front-wheel drive, it has an upright driving position and a tall greenhouse, giving it an SUV feel.  Thanks to its boxy styling, it also offers considerable cargo room, with 24 cu ft behind its second row, and 61 cu ft with the second row folded flat.  The second-generation Soul was sold from the 2014 through 2019 model years, and given its low starting price when new, it’s fairly easy to find a used Soul for around $10,000. 2. 2013 Jeep Compass

The Jeep Compass is a pretty straightforward subcompact SUV.  While an all-new Compass went on sale for the 2018 model year, buyers looking to spend around $10,000 should look to a first-generation Compass, which was sold from 2007 through 2017.  We’d recommend a 2011-or-newer model, which wears updated styling more closely aligned with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a better interior than the 2007-2010 models.  Overall, the first-gen Compass was never a segment leader during its time on sale, but it did offer good value, meaning buyers with a budget of $10,000 can pick up a newer example when compared to other vehicles on this list. 3. 2013 Nissan Juke

2013 Nissan Juke

The Juke has a little more character than your average small SUV.  It’s pretty good to drive too, with a potent 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine putting out 188 horsepower; generous in this segment.  In most examples, that’s mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission.  Available AWD rounds out the package.  If you’re looking for something that goes against the grain, and you don’t mind driving a car that kind of looks like an insect, then the Juke is a fun option. 4. 2015 Jeep Renegade

The pint-sized Renegade is Jeep’s smallest, most affordable offering.  It debuted for the 2015 model year wearing boxy, retro-inspired styling.  It’s built in Italy alongside the Fiat 500X, with which it shares its underpinnings.  A number of trim levels are offered, the most exciting of which is the Trailhawk model.  For those wanting to venture off-road, the Trailhawk offers a slightly taller suspension, different traction modes, off-road-appropriate wheels and tires, some skid plates, exposed tow hooks, and some different styling elements. 5. 2012 Scion xB

2012 Scion xB

Another front-wheel drive-only option, the xB is a boxy little hatchback built by Toyota and sold under the company’s experimental Scion brand, which was wound down after the 2016 model year.  Buyers looking for an affordable little utility vehicle and willing to go without all-wheel drive should consider a second-generation xB, built from the 2008 through 2015 model years.  The xB’s boxy design allows it to carry more cargo than you’d expect, and Toyota reliability means cost-of-ownership should be very reasonable. 6. 2013 Buick Encore

The semi-premium pint-sized Encore went on sale in the US for the 2013 model year.  It’s built on the same platform as the Chevrolet Trax, another subcompact SUV, and the Chevrolet Sonic, a subcompact hatchback.  The Encore comes powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque and sending power to either the front or all four wheels in models equipped with optional all-wheel drive. 7. 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Subaru entered the subcompact SUV fray for the 2013 model year with a ruggedized version of its popular Impreza hatchback. In addition to offering everything that’s great about the Impreza – standard all-wheel drive, a practical hatchback design, the XV Crosstrek boasts additional ground clearance, functional roof rails, and a 30 mpg highway fuel economy rating from the EPA.  There’s also a hybrid version, though it’s pretty rare.  Either way, the Crosstrek is a great choice for those wanting a practical, efficient adventure-mobile. 8. 2012 Mini Countryman

The Countryman is a four-door crossover from Mini.  While it’s similar in appearance to the tried-and-true Mini Cooper, the Countryman rides on its own platform and offers available all-wheel drive, though many you’ll come across have basic front-wheel drive.  Three trims are offered; base, S, and John Cooper Works.  The S model is a nice medium between performance and value, offering a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine making 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, along with a sport-tuned suspension, and an available manual transmission.
