Top 5 Certified Luxury Cars under $40,000

Buyers interested in a new high-end luxury car are often shocked by eye-popping prices and four-figure lease rates. Fortunately, many automakers offer comprehensive certified pre-owned programs that provide new-car peace of mind on the latest models for a fraction of the price.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite luxury cars that once commanded intimidating prices, but can now be easily had-with a fully comprehensive, manufacturer-backed warranty-for under $40,000.

2008 BMW 750Li

Despite a base price of more than $76,000 including destination, BMW’s flagship luxury sedan isn’t hard to find with a certified pre-owned warranty for under $40,000. And while all of the 40-plus certified 750Li models listed on at that price are from the sedan’s previous generation, they still feature a remarkable list of standard equipment that includes a navigation system, leather upholstery, rain-sensing wipers and dual zone automatic climate control. They also include BMW’s certified pre-owned warranty, which is good for two years and up to 100,000 vehicle miles-a comprehensive plan that’s sure to provide peace of mind to buyers who are considering the technologically advanced luxury sedan.

2007 Jaguar XK Convertible

Car shoppers willing to consider a nationwide search for the right vehicle will find a few examples of Jaguar’s flagship XK convertible for under $40,000 with a factory-backed certified warranty. While only a handful are currently available on, prices are creeping into the mid-$30,000 range, meaning the droptop is becoming increasingly affordable for luxury-minded buyers on a budget. And while Jaguar’s certified warranty only covers six years or 100,000 miles from a vehicle’s original on-sale date, most 2007 models will likely offer at least one year of comprehensive coverage. Buyers will also appreciate the XK’s timeless design, which still looks current, and its standard 4.2-liter V8, which produces a muscular 300 horsepower.

2008 Lexus IS-F

Although only a few examples of the wild Lexus IS-F sport sedan are available for less than $40,000 with a certified pre-owned warranty attached, the 416-horsepower monster is certainly becoming more affordable. That’s great news for buyers who didn’t want to spring for the sedan at its new retail price of around $63,000-especially considering that its design is virtually identical to the styling of the latest model, both inside and out. But while a sub-$40,000 price is certainly enticing, one of the biggest selling points of a certified pre-owned IS-F is Lexus’s impressive warranty, which covers the vehicle for three years or 100,000 total vehicle miles.

2007 Mercedes-Benz GL450

Even the most discerning buyers would be hard pressed to notice the difference between the 2007 and the current Mercedes-Benz GL450. But while pre-owned models share many similarities with the 2012 GL450-including a muscular 4.6-liter V8, standard all-wheel drive and a long list of included equipment-the SUVs differ greatly on their pricing. A new GL450 starts above $63,000 including destination. Meanwhile, more than 20 different 2007 models-and several 2008s-are currently available on for less than $40,000 with a certified pre-owned warranty. For the GL450, that means a one-year plan that covers up to 100,000 total vehicle miles and includes Mercedes’s remarkable 24-hour roadside assistance.

2009 Range Rover Sport

Car shoppers interested in a good deal on a Range Rover Sport will be impressed by the prices available on certified pre-owned versions of this stylish SUV. Despite a new base price of nearly $60,000, even a well-equipped 2009 model is easy to find for under $40,000, with nearly 20 available nationwide. A 2009 Sport also includes styling that’s nearly identical to today’s model, meaning the SUV won’t look outdated the moment it leaves the dealership. Best of all, Land Rover’s certified pre-owned warranty is valid for up to six years and 100,000 miles from the original sale date-meaning that many certified pre-owned 2009 Range Rover Sport models will come with three years and more than 50,000 miles of comprehensive factory-backed warranty coverage.

What it means to you: Car shoppers interested in a luxury car with a comprehensive warranty and a new design don’t have to spend a fortune on a brand-new model.
