Overview

What's New in the 2020 BMW 330i?

A version with a 6-cylinder engine arrives -- the M340i. The 330i gains a digital driver information display along with navigation as standard. There's also been some shuffling of other standard and optional features. The wagon and Gran Turismo (GT) variants, based on the previous generation, are no longer available. See the 2020 BMW 3 Series models for sale near you

Which 330i is the Best?

Be realistic about how much power is required for the majority of driving duties. There's a strong likelihood that a 330i with some well-chosen options, including things like blind spot detection, will be more than sufficient for most buyers. Find a BMW 3 Series for sale

How Much Does a 2020 BMW 330i Cost?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series premium compact sedan comes as the 330i ($41,745) and the M340i ($54,995). AWD (known as xDrive) is an extra $2,000.

The inventory of standard equipment includes 18-in alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated/power-folding side mirrors, self-dimming driver's-side and rearview mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, powered moonroof, trizone automatic climate control, digital driver information display, 14-way power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, simulated leather upholstery, selectable driving modes, 40/20/40 split/fold rear seats, an 8.8-in infotainment touchscreen, Bluetooth phone/audio, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, two USB ports, AM/FM/HD radio, a 10-speaker/205-watt audio system, a universal garage door opener and a driver fatigue monitor.

A Convenience package adds remote locking/unlocking via smartphone, keyless entry/ignition, LED headlights with cornering lights, forward-collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, active blind spot detection, front/rear parking sensors, satellite radio and extra lumbar support.

A Premium package adds heated front seats/steering wheel, head-up display and a more sophisticated version of the digital driver information display.

The Executive package has the contents of the previous two packages, along with "Icon" adaptive LED headlights with "Laserlight" and automatic high beams.

A Track Handling package has an M Sport rear differential and upgraded M Sport brakes. The M Sport package adds a sport suspension, 19-in alloy wheels wearing performance tires and an uprated steering system.

The Driving Assistance Professional package adds adaptive cruise control with a stop/go feature and an Extended Traffic Jam Assistant (which allows hands-free driving on some freeways as well as helping out with the usual commuting grind), plus active lane-keeping assistance.

The Parking Assistance package consists of a partially autonomous parking feature and a 360-degree camera system.

Among the other options are a powered trunk lid, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, ambient cabin lighting, wireless charging, Wi-Fi, adaptive M suspension, variable-ratio steering and a 16-speaker/464-watt Harman Kardon surround-sound system.

Is the 2020 BMW 330i a Safe Car?

The 3 Series comes with stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, forward-collision mitigation and eight airbags (front, front-side, front-knee and full-length side-curtain). The standard BMW Assist eCall telematics system adds automatic collision notification and an SOS button.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has yet to crash-test the new 3 Series. The previous generation received a perfect five stars overall, so it seems unlikely that this version would not perform to the same level.

The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has put the 2020 3 Series through its destructive process, awarding the top score of Good in all the crashworthiness categories, while making the car a Top Safety Pick Plus when it's fitted with the highest grade of headlights.

Competition

2020 BMW 330i vs the competition

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia -- Italian style, European handling talents and a 280-hp 4-cylinder engine.

2020 Audi A4 -- Packed with technology and highly acclaimed. Updated for 2020.

2020 Genesis G70 -- The best Genesis so far. Capable, engaging, generously equipped and reasonably priced.

2020 Jaguar XE -- Fabulous styling and suspension, and the supercharged V6 is an ideal engine choice. Might feel a tad small to some, though.

2020 Kia Stinger GT -- Not the most obvious BMW alternative, but the 365-hp Stinger GT has a lot going for it, including dynamics, styling and price.

2020 Lexus IS -- Bold styling, high levels of standard equipment for the price. Undramatic handling.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class -- Exceptionally graceful styling, slick dashboard and a pleasure to drive. The AMG C43 is a rival for the M340i.

2020 Volvo S60/V60 -- Has that inimitable Volvo style, enviable Volvo safety equipment and excellent drivetrains. The V60 is a handsome wagon version.

Used BMW 5 Series -- BMW's certified pre-owned (CPO) program could provide a low-mileage 5 Series for the price (or even less) of a new 3. The 535i is smooth and swift, but a suitably priced 550i with twin-turbo V8 power deserves serious consideration.
