Green Car Deals: June 2012

Going green doesn’t have to be expensive. While environmentally friendly cars are undoubtedly highly popular in today’s market, there are still several great deals available. We’ve searched through the June incentives to find and list some of the top deals offered this month on new cars that won’t pollute the earth-or cost a fortune at the gas pump.

Chevrolet Malibu Eco

Although the recently redesigned Chevrolet Malibu isn’t available with a major incentive, Chevrolet is still advertising interest rates as low as 2.9 percent for up to 60 months on the sedan throughout June. That’s an especially good deal on the Malibu Eco, which mates a 182-horsepower hybrid 4-cylinder to a standard six-speed automatic transmission to achieve fuel economy of 25 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway. That’s better than many mid-size sedan rivals. The Malibu Eco also offers a surprisingly reasonable base price of around $26,000 including destination, making the new model a good buy for shoppers in the mid-size sedan category who want to help save the planet.

Honda Civic Hybrid

Qualified buyers can get a low interest rate on Honda’s miserly Civic Hybrid throughout June. According to the automaker, the sedan, which starts around $25,000 including destination, is available with 0.9 percent interest for up to 36 months or 1.9 percent for up to 60 months. That’s the same offer Honda is extending to most other Civic models, but the Civic Hybrid is hardly a traditional Civic. Instead, it offers city and highway fuel economy of up to 44 mpg and a long list of standard equipment that includes automatic climate control, automatic headlights, 15-inch alloy wheels and Bluetooth.

Lexus CT200h

The smaller of Lexus’s two hybrid-only models is available with a special lease offer in June. According to the upscale automaker, the CT200h is available to lease for 36 months at just $359 per month. While taking advantage of that offer requires putting down a hefty $4,259 at lease signing, the CT200h has little trouble justifying its high cost thanks to fuel economy figures of more than 40 mpg in combined driving and traditional Lexus customer service. The CT200h also includes a long list of standard equipment ranging from a push-button starter and 17-inch alloy wheels to dual-zone automatic climate control and SiriusXM satellite radio.

Lexus HS250h

Lexus has not officially announced an incentive on its hybrid HS250h. However, the automaker’s recent decision to cancel the sedan likely means many great deals are available throughout June. And because the HS250h’s demise was sparked by slow sales, it’s likely that car shoppers won’t have to work too hard to get dealerships to lower their prices. That’s good news for buyers interested in a fuel-saving luxury car. The sedan offers many of Lexus’s traditional upscale touches such as a standard push-button starter, a power sunroof and leather upholstery, while still touting fuel economy of up to 35 mpg in city driving.

Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Car shoppers looking for a great deal on a diesel will find one this month on the compact Volkswagen Jetta. Traditionally in high demand, the Jetta is available with just one incentive in June: a 1.9 percent interest rate for up to 60 months. That won’t help buyers looking to pay cash or car shoppers interested in leasing, but it’s still a rare and valuable price break on a vehicle that achieves a tremendous 42 mpg in highway driving. Unfortunately for hatchback lovers, the offer is only available on the 2012 Jetta sedan and doesn’t extend to the practical Golf or the handsome Jetta SportWagen.

What it means to you: Although many environmentally friendly new cars are in high demand, buyers interested in a deal can find one, thanks to a host of incentives and special offers.
