2013 Dodge Challenger Bringing Back Plum Crazy, Hemi Orange

  • Challenger brings back retro Hemi Orange, Plum Crazy
  • Plum Crazy Challengers on sale in March
  • Hemi Orange to follow in May

Chrysler is bringing back two popular retro colors for the 2013 Dodge Challenger. The automaker recently announced it will soon reintroduce Plum Crazy and Hemi Orange — two hues that debuted during the muscle car era.

According to Chrysler, both colors will be available on the Challenger R/T and the high-performance Challenger SRT8. Drivers interested in the paint schemes can order one now, though Challengers finished in these colors won’t begin arriving at dealers nationwide until March.

Chrysler says that the Challenger R/T Classic will start at $35,140 with shipping when finished in Plum Crazy, which is an eye-grabbing shade of purple. That’s several thousand dollars more than a standard R/T Classic, which starts around $31,000. Other items — including a 375-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V8 — are carried over. But Plum Crazy models also boast distinct 20-inch polished wheels, an egg crate grille and a racing stripe that recalls 1960s Dodge muscle cars.

Shoppers who would rather have Plum Crazy paint on the sporty Challenger SRT8 will have to pay $44,155 with shipping for the privilege. That figure is similar to the standard SRT8 model, which also starts around $44,000. In addition to a 425-hp 6.1-liter V8, Plum Crazy SRT8 models offer white stripes and SRT performance seats.

Those who would prefer Hemi Orange will have to wait a little longer for that unique color, as Chrysler says that retro paint won’t be available until May. As a result, the automaker hasn’t announced the pricing for the Hemi Orange Challenger, though we’d expect it to be in line with figures for Plum Crazy models.

Hemi Orange was initially launched as a high impact color on the 1969 Dodge Challenger, while Plum Crazy followed in 1970. While Plum Crazy was axed just one year later, Hemi Orange stuck around through 1972. Then the two colors lay dormant until the latest Challenger briefly resurrected Hemi Orange in 2008 and Plum Crazy for 2010, only to drop them again — until now.

What it means to you: The 2013 Dodge Challenger’s unique paint schemes will likely convince a few unsure buyers to pick the sporty coupe.
