Scion, the youthful brand of Toyota, picked a Hollywood studio to reveal the production version of its hot new sports car, the 2013 Scion FR-S. A fitting place for announcing what will surely become the star of the Scion lineup going forward.

In the same general timeframe, Toyota was at the Tokyo Auto Show revealing the same car as the Toyota GT 86. The Toyota branded version is only for Japanese buyers. And, also in Japan, Subaru announced the car's more upscale sibling, the 2013 Subaru BRZ (same car with some small design changes and high tech features).

Co-developed by Toyota and Subaru, the car was originally code-named the FT-86. And, with all the buzz and forums dedicated to the coming of this car, it's developed other amusing code names including "Subieyota" and "Toyobaru," depending on personal preference.

The car was created in the spirit of Toyota's past sports car heritage, born in cars like the Supra, the MR2, the 2000GT and the Corolla GT-S (also known in Japan as the AE-86) and each of these cars where showcased at the unveiling to make the point of the car's significance to Toyota and Scion.

Scion announced its U.S. badging of the car at the 2011 New York Auto Show last April, and the final production version is pretty much identical to the concept shown at that event.

With its low-mounted 2.0-liter boxer engine that develops 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 pound-feet of torque at 6,600 rpm, the car is already being touted as the new king of affordable street racers, out-performing long time lightweight champion, Mazda Miata MX-5.

Excitement for all the versions has been off the charts for sports car enthusiasts based on its lightweight and rear-wheel drive chassis, it direct injection boxer engine and its low center of gravity. The flat four-cylinder engine comes with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

Scion revealed the production car and many details, but is leaving some announcements about the car for the upcoming launch in January at the Detroit Auto Show.

At the Hollywood FR-S launch, Scion vice president, Jack Hollis, proclaimed the car as "a machine that is THE halo car for Scion," one that "pound-for-pound and dollar-for-dollar will ignite the passion of a whole group of car fanatics." But what was not revealed was the price.

Subaru gave hints about what the pricing may be for Scion by setting its sibling at $34,095 and mentioning that it would be sold to an audience of "more mature and affluent customers than the Scion version." Although the engine set up and output numbers are identical, Subaru's BRZ will offer features such as HID headlamps and keyless start. Subaru also said that the Scion version would be "several thousands less" than the BRZ.

The Scion is slated to arrive at dealerships next in the spring of 2012, but it will soon be downloadable on the popular video game, Gran Turismo 5, where you can at least take it for a virtual spin.
