- 2014 BMW 4-Series teased in new video
- New model replaces 3 Series Coupe
- Comes out later this year as 428i or 435i
BMW has released a new video that teases the brand’s all-new 4 Series Coupe. The video gives us the most comprehensive look yet at the 4 Series, which replaces the popular 3 Series Coupe later this year.
On the outside, the 4 Series certainly borrows styling cues from the popular 3 Series. Similarities include the model’s shape, its general sizing and distinctive headlights that connect to the grille. But BMW also made several changes, such as mounting fender vents behind the front wheels.
Of course, the biggest change is the coupe body style. While previous coupe models shared their names with the 3 Series, the 4 Series heads in an entirely different direction. BMW likely made the name change to give the car its own identity, separate from the sedan.
Still, 4 Series styling is unmistakably similar to a 2-door 3 Series. But we expect the 4 Series to perform noticeably better. That’s partly because the model features a wider front and rear track along with sport-tuned suspension that lowers the body. The automaker says the 4-Series features the lowest center of gravity of any BMW on the market.
Like the 3 Series, the 4 Series will come with two available engines: a 4-cylinder and a 6-cylinder. Four-cylinder models, which will use a 2.0-liter turbo powerplant that makes 240 horsepower, will be called the 428i. BMW says the 428i will reach 60 miles per hour from a standing stop in just 5.7 seconds.
The 6-cylinder 4 Series will be called the 435i. BMW says that model uses the same 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder as the popular 335i. It’s good for the same 300 hp and 300 lb-ft in the 435i, which means 0-to-60-mph times of around five seconds flat.
Both engines will be available with an 8-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. Rear-wheel drive will be standard, though BMW’s optional xDrive all-wheel drive is a $2,000 option for either powertrain. Pricing for the 2014 BMW 4-Series starts at $41,425 with shipping for the 428i or $46,925 for the 435i.
What it means to you: Get used to saying “4 Series” instead of “3 Series Coupe.”
