2014 Chevrolet Silverado Teaser Photo Revealed

  • Chevrolet showed the 2014 Silverado in disguise.
  • The truck debuts next year.
  • Chevrolet released no other details.

General Motors recently released teaser photos of the upcoming 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup ahead of the truck’s launch next year. Wearing camouflage over its exterior to disguise the finished form, the truck looks like it will draw many design cues from today’s model, though its finalized styling and other details are unknown.

According to Chevrolet, the photo (essentially an official spy shot) shows General Motors engineers conducting final tests for the upcoming 2014 Silverado. The latest version will represent the pickup’s third generation, which will likely grow in size compared to its predecessor. But before the Silverado’s launch next year, GM says it must complete hundreds of hours and thousands of miles of rigorous testing designed to offer the best experience possible.

“In addition to torture testing, the team is paying attention to delivering a comfortable, well-balanced ride, which is being refined on a variety of track surfaces at GM’s Milford Proving Ground,” said a GM statement, which further confirmed that the new Silverado “will start production in 2013.”

Unfortunately for curious truck shoppers, the photo doesn’t show too many details of the upcoming truck’s exterior. Instead, it only gives away the Silverado’s wheel design, which appears to be revised from today’s model, and its upper cab area. Highly stylized camouflage covers the rest of the truck–a tactic often used by automakers when concealing a new product before launch.

But while the disguise covers much of the Silverado’s exterior, it’s clear the latest version of the pickup won’t stray too far from tried-and-true styling. It still features large door mirrors, squared wheel arches and a broad grille, much like its predecessor. And like most competitors, the truck steers clear of curvy lines and futuristic design in favor of a blocky, functional appearance.

Chevrolet also hasn’t confirmed what lurks under the latest Silverado’s hood, though many automotive journalists are speculating it will feature a lightweight V8 engine that will use direct fuel injection to increase fuel economy. The pickup is also expected to offer a highly luxurious trim level, potentially dubbed High Country, which will rival the Ram Laramie Longhorn trim and Ford‘s upscale F-150 King Ranch and Platinum models.

Although Chevrolet hasn’t announced more information about the 2014 Silverado, we expect to find out more details as the truck gets closer to its expected debut in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

What it means to you: The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is likely to raise the bar among full-size trucks. So it might be worth the wait for truck shoppers who don’t have to upgrade right away.
