The 2015 Toyota Camry offers some significant updates from the 2014 model. While changes have stopped short of a full redesign, the latest Camry offers a laundry list of revisions designed to add value, increase the Camry's competitiveness and help buyers forge a more emotional connection to the midsize sedan. What exactly has changed? We have the answers.

Exterior

Veteran midsize-sedan shoppers will immediately notice stylistic differences between the 2014 model and the newly refreshed 2015 Camry. They might even be surprised to learn that the car isn't fully redesigned. In front, the bumper and grille have been altered to give the car a more aggressive, bolder look, while changes to the rear end include new taillights, a new trunk lid and larger wheel arches over the rear wheels. Styling revisions are so significant that Toyota says it's changed every single panel in the latest Camry except for the roof.

Interior

Although changes to the Camry's interior aren't quite as dramatic as its exterior updates, Toyota has clearly made a great effort to freshen the Camry's cabin. The dashboard takes on a simpler, more flowing appearance, while the steering wheel has a new, more upscale look. The car also boasts a new thin-film-transistor display in the gauge cluster that's designed to provide information to the driver. Finally, upper-level Camry trims -- such as the XLE and the new-for-2015 XSE models -- add a host of new upscale materials, including suede seat inserts and handsome new stitching.

Mechanicals

Under its hood, the 2015 Camry is almost identical to the outgoing model. This won't be a problem for most shoppers, since the 2014 Camry wasn't lacking in terms of power or fuel economy. Base-level 4-cylinder Camry models will still use last year's 178-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, while shoppers who want more oomph should upgrade to the more muscular 268-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine. The Camry Hybrid will retain its 200-hp 2.5-liter hybrid 4-cylinder engine, along with its fuel economy ratings of 43 miles per gallon in the city and 39 mpg on the highway for base-level LE models and 40 mpg city/38 mpg hwy for the higher-level XLE.

Although the Camry's engines carry over unchanged, Toyota has taken strides to improve the sedan's drivability. Sporty SE models now offer more aggressive transmission tuning for better acceleration, while the new XSE trim level adds a sport suspension and specially calibrated steering that's designed to give drivers more feedback when turning.

Features

Given that the outgoing Camry was already available with nearly everything that most midsize sedan shoppers might want, Toyota didn't add too many new features to the updated 2015 model. There are some updates worth noting, however. Most immediately obvious is the 4.2-inch thin-film-transistor screen in the sedan's gauge cluster, which is standard on all Camry models except the base-level LE. There are also a few newly optional safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert and a pre-collision system. Finally, the 2015 Toyota Camry also gains a standard power driver's seat, available LED lighting and a standard backup camera.

Technology

The new Camry adds several new high-tech safety features designed to bring the sedan into closer competition with popular rivals. The new options include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert and a pre-collision system, all added to the outgoing model's suite of modern safety features, which includes a blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.

Other high-tech updates to the 2015 Camry are minimal. While the big news is that a new 4.2-in thin-film-transistor screen is in the sedan's gauge cluster, there are no changes to the sedan's Entune infotainment system or its center-mounted touchscreens, which remain available in 6.1- or 7-in variations.

Safety

Although the latest Camry has not yet been crash-tested by the federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Toyota expects the car to earn high marks. We expect the same, as the outgoing model earned a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a perfect 5-star overall score from NHTSA.

As for equipment, the Camry adds the aforementioned safety gadgets to its options list. New items include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert and a pre-collision system, which join the outgoing model's available blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic warning system. The Camry also adds a standard backup camera to the 2015 model.

Conclusions

Although it doesn't offer a full redesign, the latest Toyota Camry boasts some major changes compared to the outgoing model. We like the sedan's new features, its new styling and its new cabin -- and we enjoy the suspension tuning of the new sporty XSE model. With its latest round of changes, we think that the 2015 Camry has what it takes to remain competitive with the best midsize sedans.
