  • Ford's new F-150 to use a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6
  • Engine will make 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque
  • Upcoming 2015 F-150 scheduled to go on sale later this year

The all-new 2015 Ford F-150 will officially offer a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine when it reaches dealers later this year. That's the latest from Ford, which recently announced the new engine along with several other details about the upcoming F-150 pickup.

According to Ford, the upcoming F-150's 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 will feature an impressive 325 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque. Those are big numbers, and they're even more impressive when you consider the pickup's claimed 8,500-lb towing capacity and 2,250-lb payload.

In fact, the 2.7-liter engine's towing and payload figures even trump the 7,600-lb towing capacity and 1,910-lb payload rating of the 2015 F-150's base-level 3.5-liter V6. Despite its larger size, the 3.5-liter V6 engine makes just 283 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, giving an advantage to the smaller turbocharged powerplant.

Beyond its advantage in payload capacity, towing strength and overall power, the F-150's upcoming 2.7-liter V6 is expected to offer another major benefit: fuel economy. According to Ford, the new engine will return excellent mileage owing to its small size and advanced components. The engine will also debut Ford's Auto Start-Stop technology, which turns off the pickup at stoplights and other idle situations to save fuel.

In addition to its new 2.7-liter V6 and Auto Start-Stop technology, Ford's latest F-150 also includes a host of other new features designed to improve gas mileage. Chief among them is aluminum construction, which is designed to save weight and therefore reduce the engine's load. Typically used on high-end luxury cars, aluminum construction is rarely seen on mainstream models such as the F-150.

Check back later for our thoughts on the 2015 F-150, as we'll spend some time behind the wheel of the all-new pickup closer to its on-sale date.

What it means to you: The 2015 Ford F-150 uses a revolutionary new EcoBoost V6 designed to offer V8 performance and far superior fuel economy.
