2015 Ford Mustang to Offer Industry-Exclusive Electronic Line Lock

  • Ford’s new Mustang to offer drag-strip-friendly electronic line lock
  • Line lock feature will let drivers warm up their tires for consistent times
  • Ford says the feature is only available on the V8-powered Mustang GT

The all-new 2015 Ford Mustang is getting a new feature that will help it perform better at the drag strip. That’s the latest from Ford, which recently announced that the sports car will boast the industry-exclusive feature, dubbed “electronic line lock.”

Interestingly, the electronic line lock feature won’t help the car achieve faster drag-strip times. Instead, it’s focused on helping the Mustang stay consistent, which will aid the sports car’s drivers during bracket-racing competitions. Such racing involves competitors trying to get as close as possible to their predicted quarter-mile times without going faster.

In order to assist drivers with this goal, electronic line lock allows racers to keep the front brakes engaged while spinning the rear tires. That means drivers can easily use a drag strip’s burnout box, which allows them to warm their tires for extra grip. Once electronic line lock has performed its duties, racers can then use the Mustang’s launch-control feature for an especially consistent start.

Without electronic line lock, racers must modify their brake systems to allow the rear tires to spin while the front brakes are engaged. Some drivers also set up a mechanical line lock, controlled by a switch inside the car, that achieves the same purpose.

“We’re using advanced controls technology for the all-new Mustang to provide some of our most dedicated fans with an industry-first feature they can use when they go to the track,” said Dave Pericak, chief engineer for the Mustang. “With electronic line lock, customers who drive their Mustangs to work all week and then compete on the weekends will appreciate not having to modify their brake systems to be able to do effective tire prep at the drag strip.”

According to Ford, the line lock feature will only be offered on the high-powered Mustang GT. Featuring a 5.0-liter V8 that makes a whopping 420 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, the Mustang GT is set to debut this fall.

What it means to you: If you enjoy spending time at the drag strip, you’ll want to check the electronic line lock option when it comes time to order your 2015 Ford Mustang.
