  • 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport to replace LR2
  • Pricing starts at $39,000 with shipping; on sale in early 2015
  • Offers new interior and exterior styling, seating for seven passengers

A new model will soon join the Land Rover lineup. The high-end SUV manufacturer recently announced the upcoming arrival of the all-new Discovery Sport -- a small luxury SUV that will replace the brand's aging LR2.

On the outside, the Discovery Sport offers a completely new look, touting rounded styling, a bold front grille, and narrow headlights and taillights. Inside, the Discovery Sport offers a modern interior that combines a few unique Land Rover traits -- a rising circular gear lever, for example -- with a slightly simpler design than you'll find in upscale Land Rover models such as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

As for the Discovery Sport's powerplant, Land Rover has confirmed only one engine so far: the same 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that powers the outgoing LR2. Essentially a variant of Ford's EcoBoost engine family, the 2.0-liter powertrain makes 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque.

Perhaps the Discovery Sport's most interesting feature is its seating capacity. While most crossovers in its segment (models including the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK) offer just five seats, the Discovery Sport will instead have three rows of seats with enough room for seven passengers. That marks a first in the upscale-compact-crossover segment.

Scheduled to go on sale early next year after an official debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall, the Discovery Sport will start around $39,000 with shipping.

What it means to you: The all-new 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport offers a far more modern approach than the outdated LR2.
