  • The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and the 2019 GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks are both all-new.

  • The Sierra moves further upmarket with some exclusive features you can't get on the Silverado.

  • Both trucks cover a wide price range from stripped-down work truck to high-end luxury truck or anything in between.

The pickup truck market is as competitive as ever. One of the biggest players in the truck game is General Motors with its offerings from both Chevrolet and GMC. Some of its biggest sellers are the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra, two full-size pickup trucks that have always had a lot in common.

The Sierra and the Silverado are still mechanically identical, but they're both all new for 2019 and there's a little more than just the badging setting them apart. Let's take a look at the differences and similarities between the all-new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs. 2019 GMC Sierra exterior

Exterior

Some of the biggest differences you'll find between these two pickups is in their exterior styling. They both have an all-new look for 2019 setting them further apart aesthetically than ever before. As usual, the Sierra has a bit more of a premium look than the Silverado does to distinguish the GMC as the more luxurious truck.

Another big difference in their exteriors is in their cabin configurations. The Silverado is still available as a single cab, extended cab or crew cab depending on how many seats you want and how much back seat space you want. The new Sierra, on the other hand, can only be had with an extended cab or a crew cab. If you want a new full-size pickup from GM with only two doors, a single-cab Silverado is now your only option.

With both trucks, the aesthetics can change pretty drastically depending on which trim you choose. For example, the Silverado High Country and the Sierra Denali have fancy exclusive grilles, noting the luxurious appointments inside, while the Silverado Trail Boss and Sierra AT4 have more rugged appearances due to their off-roading natures with things like black grilles and red tow hooks.

One cool exterior feature you can get on the Sierra that you can't get on the Silverado is the MultiPro tailgate. It's a special tailgate that's exclusive to the new Sierra and it can fold out into six different configurations including load stops, steps, a cutaway giving you easy access to the bed and even a desk.

As with every generation of these trucks, everyone has their own personal preference on which one is better looking.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs. 2019 GMC Sierra interior

Interior

These two GM trucks are a lot more similar on the inside than they are on the outside. The interior design isn't too different from the previous generation, looking very functional and rather simple. Anyone who drives the previous generation of the Silverado or the Sierra will feel right at home in one of the new trucks. One part of the interior that is much improved is a new instrument cluster.

The interiors of both trucks can get very luxurious with appointments like leather seats, wood interior trim, a head-up display and much more. Another clever feature available in both trucks is hidden storage compartments in the backrests of the back seats.

As for interior space, the back seat of the crew cab is noticeably roomier than the outgoing model. Obviously, the crew cab yields more back-seat legroom than the extended cab and the crew cab, and is what we'd recommend if you're planning on having passengers in the back seat regularly.

Aside from some minor points in the design, the interiors of the 2019 Silverado and the 2019 Sierra are very similar.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs. 2019 GMC Sierra mechanicals

Mechanicals

As you might expect, the powertrain options in the Sierra and the Silverado are exactly the same.

2019 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Engines

  • 4.3-liter V6; 285 horsepower, 305 lb-ft of torque; 16 miles per gallon in the city and 21 mpg on the highway

  • 2.7-liter turbocharged inline four; 310 hp, 348 lb-ft of torque; 20 mpg city/23 mpg hwy

  • 5.3-liter V8; 355 hp, 383 lb-ft of torque; 17 mpg city/23 mpg hwy

  • 6.2-liter V8; 420 hp, 460 lb-ft of torque; 16 mpg city/20 mpg hwy

  • 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline six; 282 hp, 450 lb-ft of torque; 28 mpg hwy

For the new generation of the Sierra and the Silverado, there is a lot of variety under the hood. You have your choice of an efficient 4-cylinder, an affordable V6, two strong V8s or an efficient and torquey diesel (with late availability). The engine you're probably most likely to find in either truck is the 5.3-liter V8, which offers a nice blend of power and fuel economy.

Both trucks come standard with rear-wheel drive with optional 4-wheel drive. Upgrading to 4WD makes the truck more capable off-road and in bad road conditions, but you'll also take a small fuel economy hit if you go with 4WD.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs. 2019 GMC Sierra pricing

Pricing

The GMC Sierra is priced a little higher than the Silverado, and the gap in starting prices between the two trucks is bigger than before. The 2019 Silverado has a starting MSRP of $28,300 and the Sierra starts at $33,500. One of the reasons for the big gap in starting prices is the fact that you can get a single-cab Silverado, but you can't get a single-cab Sierra.

There are also price gaps on the high end of these trucks. The range-topping Silverado High Country starts at $53,000 and the Sierra Denali starts at $54,700. Both trucks can get well into the $60k range by upgrading to the 6.2-liter V8 and adding options like a head-up display.

When the two trucks are optioned about the same side-by-side, the GMC is always a little pricier than the Chevy.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado vs. 2019 GMC Sierra conclusion

Conclusion

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is so similar to the 2019 GMC Sierra, it's hard to declare one better than the other. The differences are in aesthetics and a few options here and there that you can get with one that you can't get with the other like the Sierra-exclusive MultiPro tailgate. Which truck is right for you comes down to your budget and your personal preference more than anything else.
