What Is It?

The 2019 Lincoln Nautilus is a midsize luxury crossover that's replacing the MKX next year. It officially debuts at the Los Angeles Auto Show, boasting freshened styling compared to the MKX, along with new features and powertrains.

Aside from its new name (Lincoln seems to be ditching three-letter names, having recently released the Continental sedan and having now cast aside the "MKX" name for "Nautilus"), the biggest change on the outside of the new Lincoln SUV is its styling: It offers an updated grille and more modernized lines compared to the outgoing MKX. Under the hood, two engines are offered: a 245-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, and a 335-hp 2.7-liter turbocharged V6. The MKX's naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V6, which slotted in the middle of those engines, is now gone.

In terms of other changes, the Nautilus doesn't make huge strides forward over the MKX, largely because the MKX wasn't very old -- it was released for the 2016 model year, meaning it already included most of the latest high-tech features. Still, the Nautilus offers a suite of modern safety technology (including a useful lane-centering feature that can be paired with adaptive cruise control), though it stops short of offering major interior updates over the MKX.

How Much?

Lincoln hasn't yet released pricing, but we wouldn't expect a major change compared to the MKX, which started around $39,500 with shipping.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

Although Lincoln hasn't pushed hard to conquer the "sporty" market like many other brands, it's cornering a segment of the luxury automotive world that's increasingly being forgotten by car companies: relaxed, smooth, comfortable luxury, for all the shoppers who don't focus on 0-to-60 times and sporty steering and handling. The Nautilus picks up right where vehicles like the outgoing Lexus RX left off, prioritizing high-quality interiors and comfortable ride quality above all else. It's worth a look if you're interested in a midsize luxury SUV without a high-performance focus.

Other Cars to Consider

Acura MDX -- The Acura MDX is a little larger than the Nautilus, and (unlike the Nautilus) it offers 3-row seating. But the price point is similar -- and while the MDX's interior isn't quite as luxurious, shoppers who need the added practicality will likely prefer the Acura.

Cadillac XT5 -- The Cadillac XT5 also focuses more on luxury and comfort than driving experience, and it touts some excellent technology and sharp, modern styling.

Lexus RX -- The Lexus RX's styling and driving experience have grown more aggressive in recent years, but it still offers the same excellent dealership experience as always -- and it touts Lexus's excellent reputation for durability and reliability.

Used Mercedes-Benz GLE -- The Mercedes-Benz GLE offers a handsome interior and a comfortable driving experience, plus the cachet of the Mercedes-Benz name. But the GLE is pricey, starting at nearly $56,000 -- so you may want to consider a used model, or one with the Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned warranty.
