7 Crazy Luxury and Performance Cars You Can Buy With a CPO or CarMax Warranty

As you probably know, I’ve spent the last 4 years driving around in a used Range Rover with a generous CarMax warranty that has fixed all of its many ills. Unfortunately, CarMax has made a few changes to its warranty policy after my much-publicized Range Rover ownership — including jacking up the price of warranties on used Range Rovers and shortening its warranty coverage from 6 years to 5.

But if you’re looking for a high-end luxury car or performance car with a warranty, you can still find one — between the brilliant CarMax warranty and several generous manufacturer certified pre-owned (CPO) programs. Here are seven examples currently listed on Autotrader.

Audi R8

Audi R8 — $104,999 (CPO)

Audi’s certified pre-owned program is among the best in the industry, as it offers 6 years or 100,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage from the vehicle’s original sale date. Unfortunately, the warranty isn’t available on very many R8s: This 2012 model is one of just two certified pre-owned models listed on Autotrader across the entire country. Available at Prestige Audi in North Miami, Florida, this one is the cream of the R8 crop: a roadster model with the sports car’s 5.2-liter V10 engine, offered for $104,999. If only it was a stick shift. I’ll let that go, considering it still has 2 years of trouble-free driving to go. Find a 2012 Audi R8 for sale

Bentley Flying Spur

Bentley Continental Flying Spur — $164,900 (CPO)

Bentley’s certified pre-owned program is exactly like the program for my Aston Martin: only 1 year of protection, but full bumper-to-bumper coverage — and for unlimited miles. This 2008 Flying Spur is the cheapest certified pre-owned Bentley listed on Autotrader, with an asking price of just $164,900 — likely over $100,000 off the original MSRP. The reason for its low price isn’t surprising: This Flying Spur has 75,000 miles on the odometer, suggesting it was used as a daily driver — an anomaly for a Bentley, since they’re usually second or third cars reserved for special occasions. Find a 2008 Bentley Flying Spur for sale

BMW B7 Alpina

BMW Alpina B7 — $45,998 (CarMax)

Since there’s no M version of BMW’s luxurious 7 Series sedan, the sporty Alpina B7 will have to do. This 2011 model is particularly appealing, as it uses the brand’s newest body style and features a gorgeous color combination, with Alpina’s signature blue over a rich tan leather interior. The best part: This Alpina B7 is only $45,998 from CarMax in Fort Worth, Texas, though you’ll have to pay a little extra for the 5-year warranty — something we highly recommend if you plan to frequently drive the 500-horsepower B7 to its full potential of 4.5-second 0-to-60 mile-per-hour time runs. Find a 2011 BMW Alpina B7 for sale

Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG

Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 — $49,995 (CPO)

While the Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned warranty only offers 1 year of additional coverage beyond the factory warranty, it’s often available on some gems — such as this 2011 AMG S63. Listed for sale by Mercedes-Benz of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi, this S63 touts 536 hp, 590 lb-ft of torque and an enormous amount of modern luxuries — all for just $49,995, including the 1-year warranty. That’s a huge discount from the 2011 S63’s original price, which started at $139,000 with shipping just 5 years ago. Find a 2011 Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG for sale

Porsche Panamera Turbo

Porsche Panamera Turbo — $57,981 (CPO)

Porsche’s certified pre-owned warranty is among the very best, as it offers 2 years of bumper-to-bumper coverage on most models and up to 8 years of coverage on others — both of which are generous plans for high-performance vehicles with a lot of complicated features and equipment. This 2010 Panamera Turbo is an especially enticing deal, as it’s offered by Porsche Salt Lake City for just $57,981 — a figure equivalent to roughly a third of its original MSRP. Not only does that number buy you a certified pre-owned warranty, but it also gets you 500 hp, all-wheel drive, Porsche’s lightning-quick PDK transmission and one of the most distinctive luxury-sedan designs on the road. Find a 2010 Porsche Panamera for sale

Range Rover Sport

Range Rover Sport — $35,998 (CarMax)

Although CarMax has largely closed the “Range Rover loophole” — offering only a few Range Rover models and dramatically increasing the warranty prices on the ones they have — it’s a different story with the smaller Range Rover Sport. The Sport is still easy to find at CarMax locations around the country, and it’s still available with a reasonably priced 5-year warranty. This particular Range Rover Sport — listed at the CarMax in Roseville, California, near Sacramento — is just 3 years old, but comes with an asking price of $35,998, plus the cost of the warranty. In other words: Yes, you can still live out your CarMax Range Rover fantasies. Find a Range Rover Sport for sale

Volkswagen Golf R

Volkswagen Golf R — $24,998 (CarMax)

The Volkswagen Golf R is one of today’s most exciting performance cars, and it’s hampered only by its price: Base models start at $36,600, and you’d be lucky to find one for anything close to that number. As a result, it’s CarMax to the rescue. While this 2013 Golf R isn’t as cool and fresh as a brand-new model, it still offers 260 hp, standard all-wheel drive and a tremendously well-built interior. Most importantly, it’s only $24,998, plus the cost of the 5-year CarMax warranty — giving it an alluring appeal for Golf-R-desiring drivers on a budget. Find a 2013 Volkswagen Golf R for sale

  1. Some good choices in there. I wonder how much the Carmax warranty would be on that Alpina. They used to list the price for the specific car on the website, but I don’t see it on there. If they don’t tell you until you get there, they could easily price the warranties high enough that people don’t actually buy them on cars like that.

  2. Another car that should be added to the list would the Mazda RX-8. While it would be the cheapest car on this list by far, having a warranty like this on a car known for engine failure that costs $7000 would be an excellent use of this kind of warranty

    • While it would be nice to get a warranty on those, I think they’re too old for Mazda dealers to sell them as CPO and too old for Carmax to include a warranty.
