Although the original Audi TT RS never really caused the car world to go bananas, it's an absolute beast. When it came out back in 2012, the TT RS was meant to rival the BMW 1M -- and it was actually able to hold its own against the legendary Bimmer. However, while the 1M immediately started appreciating in value after it went out of production, the TT RS has depreciated quite a bit over the past few years. Now, you can pick up a lightly used model for about as much as a new Golf R.

The TT RS was the ultimate model of the TT series. The ubiquitous Volkswagen 2-liter turbo four was tossed out in favor of a 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder that sent 360 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. Those numbers probably sound impressive, and they are: the TT RS's torque figure is just 40 lb-ft less than that of an Audi R8 V10.

The result was that the U.S.-spec TT RS reached 60 mph in four seconds flat -- though it was even quicker in Europe, where the TT RS got an available dual-clutch automatic, in addition to the 6-speed manual that was mandatory in the U.S. The TT RS also offered impressive handling, with the ability to hold 0.96g in the corners before predictable understeer started coming on.

Basically, the TT RS is fast -- and easy to drive fast. It was also easy to live with, as the all-wheel-drive system made it competent in all weather conditions -- and the interior is a genuinely nice place to be. Yes, the rear seat is pretty much vestigial, but you can put a good amount of stuff in the trunk. Best of all, the TT RS is a handsome car -- and it looks like nothing else on the road.

Initially, the TT RS had a retail price of around $60,000 -- but today, you can pick up a 35,000-mile example for around $40,000. Autotrader currently has 24 TT RS models for sale across the country, with an average price of $43,175. Values certainly haven't held like with the rival BMW 1M -- and that means you can now actually enjoy this monster of a sports car at a fairly accessible price point.
