Here's something I've just discovered: The Lexus IS F is a pretty good deal right now. If you look on Autotrader, the average nationwide asking price for an IS F is about $31,500 -- and that figure includes a lot of 2011 and 2012 models. If you cap your search at 2010, that average asking price drops to around $27,000.

Now, before I get into the particulars of the IS F, I know what you're thinking -- and that's probably something along the lines of how $27,000 doesn't seem like a great deal for a car that's 7 to 10 years old. But hear me out.

Reason number one why the IS F is a good deal: because it's a lot cheaper than the competition. While a 2008-2010 IS F is around $27,000, the average asking price for a 2008-2010 BMW M3 is just a hair under $30,000. Same deal for a 2008-2010 Mercedes C63 AMG: just under $29,000. That alone should earn the IS F a spot on your shopping list, as it's around 10 percent cheaper than rivals on average -- not a small figure in the world of used performance cars.

Another reason to consider the IS F: It has better performance than you might expect. The IS F had 416 horsepower and 371 lb-ft of torque -- more power than the M3 (414 horsepower) and dramatically more torque (the BMW had just 295 lb-ft). Admittedly, it's not more powerful than the C63 AMG (451 hp and 443 lb-ft), but the IS F also boasts surprisingly sharp handling and well-connected steering considering it hails from Lexus in the late 2000s, when most models were cushy and soft.

And then there's the obvious ace up the IS F's sleeve: It's reliable. While the C63 AMG could suffer from the dreaded Mercedes head bolt failure, and while the M3 makes do with BMW's advanced VANOS system -- along with whatever else German engineers could dream up in both vehicles -- you'll find very few online complaints about the IS F's dependability. It may not have the brand name of an AMG vehicle or a BMW M car -- but it won't have the repair bills, either.

Indeed, if you're looking for a high-performance luxury sports sedan for around thirty grand, add the IS F to your shopping list. If you prioritize value over brand name, you might be surprised at what you find.
