Simply put, the GT3 is the ultimate Acura NSX. The exposed carbon-fiber bodywork, the huge deck wing spoiler and the exaggerated front and rear diffusers are just some of the visual features revealed as Acura released photos of its NSX GT3 racecar testing at GingerMan Raceway in Michigan.

Under all that carbon fiber and aft of the cabin is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that Acura says uses the same basic design specifications found in the production 2017 Acura NSX. The block, heads, valvetrain, crankshaft, pistons and dry-sump lubrication system are carried over. The transmission it's attached to is not, however, as the NSX GT3 racecar utilizes a 6-speed automated manual racing gearbox that powers the rear wheels only. In contrast, the 2017 Acura NSX has a 9-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a pair of electric motors powering the front wheels, as well.

Like the production NSX, the GT3 racecar is American-made, produced at Honda's Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio. Testing was done on tracks in Europe and Japan, with additional development and testing currently under way at Honda Performance Development in California.

The Acura NSX GT3 racecar will compete in the Group GT3 racing series, also known as Cup Grand Touring Cars or simply GT3. It features a wide variety of production cars heavily modified for racing. Other cars in GT3 include the Ferrari 488, the McLaren 650S, the Lamborghini Huracan and the Porsche 911 GT3 R.

A different Acura NSX racecar recently topped its class in the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. That car was closer to the production version, as its electric system remained intact.

The production 2017 Acura NSX is available to purchase now, with a starting price of $157,800.
