After many months of waiting and anticipation, Alfa Romeo has finally announced pricing for its Giulia sport sedan. The automaker says the Giulia will start at $38,990 with destination when it goes on sale next month, while the Ti model will start at $40,990. The range-topping Giulia Quadrifoglio, which is apparently the Italian way of saying "M" or "AMG," starts at $73,595 with shipping.

So, how does that stack up against rivals?

First, it's important to understand exactly which cars compete against the Alfa Romeo Giulia. At 182.6 inches long, the Giulia is almost exactly the same length as the BMW 3 Series (182.4 inches) and only slightly smaller than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan (184.5 inches) and the Audi A4 (186.1 inches). So the Giulia is aimed directly at the 3 Series and its rivals, not at larger sedans like the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, as some thought when the first images were shown.

So, how does the Giulia's pricing stack up against its competitors? The base-level Giulia uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque. It's only offered with an 8-speed automatic, but drivers can choose between rear- or all-wheel drive (for $2,000 extra). The midrange Giulia Ti adds some equipment, while the Quadrifoglio boasts a raucous 2.9-liter twin turbocharged V6 with 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, mated solely to rear-wheel drive and once again only offered with an automatic transmission.

Meanwhile, the BMW 3 Series starts from $34,400 with shipping -- but that's for a base-level 320i model, which has just 180 horsepower. The midlevel 330i offers 248 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque, which is closer to the Giulia's 280 hp and 306 lb-ft, for a base price of $39,745 with shipping (or $41,745 with all-wheel drive). That means the Giulia offers more power for the money.

As for the Quadrifoglio, its closest BMW competitor is the M3, which starts at just $65,945 with shipping, a far cry from the Giulia's $73,595 base price. But while the Giulia offers 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, the M3 touts just 425 hp (or, if you opt for the pricey Competiton Package, 444 hp). In other words, for true power junkies, the M3 doesn't match up to the Alfa.

Now, on to the C-Class. The base-level C300 starts at $40,425 with shipping and offers 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque -- making the base-level Giulia ($38,990 for 280 hp) a better value. The Mercedes-AMG C63 S manages to match the Giulia Quadrifoglio's 505 hp with 503 hp -- but it also has a slightly higher price of $73,725 with shipping.

The result: The Giulia seems to offer two advantages over its closest rivals. The most obvious is its base-level power output, as the Giulia touts 32 hp more than the 330i and 39 hp more than the C300 -- despite lower pricing than both German rivals. The Giulia also has a power advantage with its Quadrifoglio model: No BMW M3 matches the Giulia's power, while AMG shoppers have to step up to the C63's S model just to get the Giulia's muscle.

So, for you prospective 3 Series and C-Class buyers, those are all the numbers for the newest Italian competitor in the luxury sport-sedan segment. Now I really want to drive it.
