All-New Nissan Titan Coming to Next Year’s Detroit Auto Show

  • Nissan’s full-size Titan pickup to be redesigned
  • All-new model slated to appear at next year’s Detroit Auto Show
  • Most details unknown, but Nissan says a diesel V8 is likely

An all-new Nissan Titan is less than a year away. That’s the latest from Nissan, which recently announced plans to unveil a totally redesigned Titan at the Detroit Auto Show early next year.

While Nissan didn’t reveal many details about the upcoming Titan, a full redesign will be good news for the full-size pickup. The current Titan came out for the 2004 model year and has only received minor updates since then. That makes it the oldest pickup on the market — a major factor in slumping popularity that places the Titan last in sales among full-size trucks.

The announcement of a new Titan came from Andy Palmer, Nissan executive vice president. Palmer confirmed the truck will debut at next year’s Detroit Auto Show, which takes place in January. That suggests the pickup will go on sale next summer, likely as a 2016 model.

While we’re not sure what the next Titan will look like, Nissan confirmed last year that the pickup will offer a diesel-powered V8 engine. That makes it only the second light-duty, full-size truck to offer diesel power, after the RAM 1500 added a diesel engine last year. But the RAM’s diesel is a V6, meaning the Titan will likely offer more power and torque — two factors that will make the engine more capable for pickup truck duties.

Beyond the V8 diesel, not much is known about the next Titan. Today’s model offers two body styles — an extended cab, called King Cab, and a 4-door Crew Cab. It also comes with only one engine: a 317-horsepower 5.6-liter V8. Each of the Titan’s rivals offers a wider array of body styles and engine choices, so we’d expect to see more options when the next Titan makes its debut.

What it means to you: When it arrives next year, the upcoming Nissan Titan will enter a crowded, competitive field headlined by new pickups from Ford and General Motors.
