  • Audi reveals sneak peak of the interior in its upcoming 2013 A3
  • Major updates include a revised dashboard, new gauges and a new center stack

Audi won't reveal its all-new 2013 A3 until the Geneva Auto Show in March, but that hasn't stopped the automaker from previewing the upscale hatchback's interior ahead of its global debut. The sneak peak came at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where Audi showed off an example of the new model's heavily redesigned cabin.

Unveiled on Audi's stand at the show, the new interior features revised controls, a new dashboard and updated gauges. The most noticeable changes include a new center stack that incorporates less buttons than its predecessor, new air conditioning vents and an updated center console that includes a push-button starter and top-quality materials characteristic of recent Audis.

But while the A3's interior styling has undergone a series of updates, Audi says the biggest change is to its center-mounted MMI infotainment system. An acronym for "multi-media interface," the system integrates touchpad technology directly into its new, larger control knob, meaning drivers don't have to lift their hands to write out individual letters. Other changes include updated on-screen menus and new console-mounted buttons designed to make it easier to move between functions.

But the new technology in the 2013 A3's interior doesn't stop with its MMI controls. According to Audi, the upscale hatchback will include its first-ever multi-media expansion (MMX) board, allowing its center-mounted screen to display crystal-clear images and 3D animations and receive updates as technology improves. Other changes include the addition of Google Street View to the navigation system's already-impressive integration with Google Earth and an available iPhone cradle designed to boost range.

After debuting in many other markets for the 1996 model year, Audi's compact A3 didn't make its first appearance on the U.S. market until the 2006 model year. Sold exclusively in a five-door body style, the A3 gives shoppers a choice between a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant and an available 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder that returns an impressive 30 miles per gallon in the city and 42 mpg in highway driving.

Although Audi hasn't announced any further details on the upcoming 2013 A3, we'll be on hand at this year's Geneva Auto Show to provide live coverage when the all-new model is officially revealed.

What it means to you: Audi's upscale compact is adding more luxury and more technology to its latest iteration.
