Audi's high-performance S8 sedan is the most stolen passenger car in the United States. So says a new study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which also found that while the S8 has the highest theft rate, the popular Toyota Camry remains the most stolen vehicle overall.

The study, which was based on 2009 data on passenger car thefts, found that a whopping 8.81 out of every 1,000 Audi S8s produced that year were stolen. Other vehicles with high theft rates include Ford's Shelby GT500 Mustang, which trailed just behind the S8 at 8.61 thefts per 1,000 units, and the BMW M5, Dodge Charger and Honda S2000, which each scored above 5.5 thefts per 1,000 units.

Overall, however, it was the Toyota Camry that led the charge among the nation's most stolen cars overall, with 781 units reported stolen throughout 2009. Also high on the aggregate list of stolen cars was the Toyota Corolla, at 632 units, and the full-size Chevrolet Impala and Dodge Charger sedans, which accounted for more than 400 thefts apiece during 2009.

But despite such a high rate of S8s being stolen - and such a high number of Camrys - NHTSA says car thefts actually dropped more than 21 percent during 2009 to a rate of just 1.33 thefts per 1,000 vehicles. According to the organization, there are several possible explanations for the decline.

"The agency believes that the theft rate reduction could be the result of several factors including the increased use of standard antitheft devices, vehicle parts marking, increased and improved prosecution efforts by law enforcement organizations and increased public awareness," said NHTSA in a statement to the Detroit News.

So what vehicle is the safest from car thieves? That would be the Mercury Mariner, which recorded a theft rate of just 0.08 per 1,000 vehicles throughout 2009. According to NHTSA, more than 25,000 Mariners were produced during the year, but just two were stolen.
