The Audi TTS Leaves Me Completely Torn Between Emotion and Reason

The 2017 Audi TTS is a bit of a conundrum. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an absolutely fantastic car — but it doesn’t make a lot of sense.

First and foremost, the TTS is fast. With a 292-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, all-wheel drive, and an S-tronic dual-clutch automatic, the TTS will rip to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and holds on in the corners like the road is made of tree sap. The styling of the TTS is also completely on point. It’s one of the more attractive German cars currently available — and the interior is one of the most innovative I’ve seen in any car. Audi ditched the traditional "iPad glued to the dash" motif in favor of their new virtual cockpit, which displays all the infotainment and navigation functions you’ll need on screen in front of you. The climate controls have also moved to little dials on the air vents, which themselves look like jet turbines. Basically, the TTS is fun to drive, it looks fantastic inside and out, and it definitely leaves an impression on you. But here’s the thing: The TTS starts at $52,825, and you’ll be pushing $60,000 once you start adding options.

That price is what makes the TTS a head-scratcher. For almost the exact same price you can get yourself a Porsche Cayman, which is a dedicated midengined sports car that offers a much more engaging driving experience at the expense of the TTS’s vestigial rear seats. On the other hand, you can get an Audi S3 for $43,425 — which has the same engine, drivetrain and MQB bones as the TTS but offers four doors and a usable rear seat. There’s no reason why anyone should buy the TTS when there are clearly better and more practical driving options.

And yet … that interior. Good design feels good. It’s relaxing. That wonderful interior is the calling card of the TTS, and it’s something no other car in that price range offers.   1. The tt has never made sense, it was always one cylinder above the Golfs and Miatas of the world but one below the SLK, Z4 and a bit higher up Coxster twins. With the price getting so high on the TT audi sort of crossing their hands saying “hrmph its a real german sub exotic” its more out of place than ever.

  2. Except that the new Cayman is a turbo four which is absolutely horrible compared to the flat six it replaces. Iv had it for a day as a service loaner and i couldn’t believe Porsche is asking $84k for the car i was driving. The clatter and harshness with the turbo lag and non linear power delivery completely ruins this car.
