In the market for a used car? AutoNation may have just what you're looking for.

The largest U.S. retailer of new cars is branching out into the previously-owned car arena with the launch of brick-and-mortar used-vehicle stores.

It's part of a massive $500 million brand-extension strategy -- an effort to tap into the nearly $40-million-per-year marketplace for previously owned cars and trucks.

New Stores, Used Cars

Folks in the Houston area will see the retailer's first store next spring, followed by Corpus Christi in June. Phoenix and Las Vegas are also slated to get stores next year, with Las Vegas expected to get two retail establishments. An additional 20 stores are in development, and up to 100 are possible for the retailer's current footprint.

In addition to the stores, the retailer will add collision centers and renovate existing ones, launch a line of AutoNation-branded maintenance and repair parts, sell newly branded vehicle accessories and expand its auction business to five locations within the next two years.

Haggle-Free Zones

If haggling gives you the willies, no worries: AutoNation will move to no-haggle pricing for all used vehicles, both those sold at AutoNation USA stores and at the retailer's traditional 270 franchised dealerships. Customers also won't have to worry about jumping though a lot of hoops at the dealership: A single employee will handle the transaction from start to finish using a tablet computer. All cars will be priced to market conditions, with no price negotiations during the sale. Once a car shopper has selected a vehicle, the buying process is expected to finish in an hour or less.

Selection and customer service should be pretty extensive, too: AutoNation USA stores will carry 250 to 300 cars in stock and feature teams of around 60 employees, including technicians.
