  • Autotrader has officially announced the car color of the year
  • Metallic black is the top color of 2015, based on search data
  • We will commemorate our findings at this year's New York Fashion Week

Autotrader has officially named the car color of the year: metallic black. We came to this conclusion based on consumer vehicle searches carried out during the first six months of 2015.

The color is so popular that an impressive one in four vehicles searched for on the website are black. The most popular black vehicles on the site are the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Jeep Wrangler, while the most popular black luxury vehicles are the BMW X5, Mercedes S550 and Cadillac CTS.

We will commemorate our crowning of the "car color of the year" at New York Fashion Week's KIA STYLE360 event, which runs from September 14-17 in Manhattan. The occasion will be marked by a collaboration with artist Natalie Dee's SUPER BLACK Lacquers to create a limited run of "Autotrader Black" nail polish.

According to our managing editor, Tara Trompeter, "People are more likely to buy cars that reflect their personalities, the same way they do with fashion and accessories. And everyone knows it doesn't get more classic than black."

Not surprisingly, many consumers we surveyed confirmed that color is "very important" when buying a vehicle. In fact, a full three-quarters of respondents said they would delay their purchase to get the car they want in the color they want.

Interestingly, however, most shoppers surveyed don't want their car to be painted a bright color, instead preferring neutral tones such as white, silver or -- of course -- black. Many respondents noted that they "like the look" of brightly colored cars "but not to own or drive."

What it means to you: According to our recent data, metallic black is the in color to have on your car this year.
