Autotrader Find: 1982 Jeep Scrambler Restoration

Old Jeeps are fairly common, so it can be easy to overlook those that are particularly special. Take this one, for example. From the front, it looks like any other 1980s CJ model, but look more closely and you’ll realize this one is a unique CJ-8 Scrambler.

The Jeep Scrambler was an elongated version of the CJ-7, which was sold from the 1976 through 1986 model years before being replaced by the Wrangler. Beyond its increased length, the CJ-8 Scrambler was differentiated by its half-cab, which separated the two-seated passenger area from the rear, creating a bed-like space in the back. The Scrambler came with some noteworthy appearance bits like graphics, special colors and unique wheels. While every Scrambler was a CJ-8 model, not all CJ-8s were Scramblers, at least not technically, as a small batch of non-Scrambler CJ-8s were built with right-hand drive for use by the Alaskan Postal Service.

Sales of the CJ-8 took place from the 1981 through 1986 model years. According to, 7,759 were produced for the 1982 model year, and 27,792 were produced in total over the model’s six years of production. 1986 was the rarest model year by a long shot, with just 128 CJ-8s produced.

This Jeep Scrambler comes fully restored. Highlights include a 6-in lift kit, 35-in oversized mud-terrain tires, custom bumpers, a Warn winch, a bikini top, upgraded bucket seats and more. Under the hood is an AMC inline 6-cylinder, likely paired with either a 4- or 5-speed manual transmission, although the listing doesn’t specify. One thing the listing does claim is that there are just 5,000 miles on the odometer, but this is clearly a post-restoration figure. I’d recommend getting the actual mileage before moving forward with a purchase. The seller sure is treating this like a low-mileage Jeep, though, with an asking price just north of $20,000.
