Autotrader Find: 1983 Jeep J10 Honcho Stepside

The new 2020 Jeep Gladiator marks the brand’s triumphant return to the pickup truck segment after a lengthy sabbatical. The Gladiator is the first Jeep pickup in almost 30 years, but before that hiatus, the Jeep brand always had trucks in its lineup going all the way back to the 1940s if you count the Willys Jeep Truck. Today’s Autotrader find is from the long-running Jeep J-Series of trucks that ran from the early ’60s to the late ’80s, specifically a 1983 Jeep J10 Honcho Stepside.

This brown and gold Jeep captures the essence of ’80s Jeep pickup trucks. Even when Jeep was making trucks that were competitive with more mainstream trucks from the likes of Ford and General Motors, they had an inimitable character much like in the brand’s SUVs. That character shines through in this quirky Jeep truck with its unusual shape and vibrant color scheme.

The Honcho Stepside is quite a rarity in Jeep trucks with 1,264 examples being built between 1980–1983 according to the listing. The one you see here is powered by the venerable AMC 4.2-liter inline-6 found in many Jeep and AMC vehicles, and it’s linked to a 4-speed manual transmission. While sturdy and dependable, this engine only makes 112 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque so don’t expect to do a lot of heavy-duty towing or hauling with this truck. This is a retro version of what you might call a “lifestyle truck.”

Despite not exactly having the look of a work truck, this Jeep used to be a snowplow according to the listing, and the seller still has the plow kit, which is included in the sale for whoever buys the truck. The previous owner breathed some life back into this truck getting the underbody sandblasted, painted and detailed. The previous owner also did a restoration of the interior, and it looks fantastic — much better than what you’d expect from a snowplow from the ’80s.

This Jeep J10 Honcho is available for sale at Jim Babish Auto Sales in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, with an asking price of $18,900. The seller is offering “shipping to your doorstep worldwide.” If you like the idea of a new Gladiator but want something with even more character for less money (albeit a bit less practical), this Honcho is one unique pickup.
