As many of you know, used Rolls-Royces are famous for fast, long, major depreciation curves that end at a price that’d make the original owner openly weep on his Persian rug — which, by the way, is probably more valuable than his Rolls-Royce. But I bet you didn’t know they can get this cheap.
Today’s Autotrader Find is a 1985 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit currently listed for $9,995. This is an incredibly small amount of money when you really think about it. You can’t purchase a new car for this amount of money. Any new car. Amazon sells home refrigerators that cost more than this Rolls-Royce. They are called, and this is completely true, the Thermador.
In fact, this Rolls is so cheap that it undercuts the price of many regular used cars. If you were looking at a used Camry for $9,995, you’d probably be checking out 8-year-old examples with something like 85,000 miles on the odometer. Think about it. An 8-year-old Camry? Or a V8-powered Rolls-Royce with lamb’s-wool floor mats?
So why is it so cheap? I’d say the main reason is the current mileage. This Rolls-Royce is offered by Jaguar Land Rover of Minneapolis, located in the nearby suburb of Golden Valley, Minnesota, with an impressive 158,658 miles on the odometer. For a Rolls-Royce, this is a lot of miles. Other Silver Spirits of similar age on Autotrader have 79,000 miles, 45,000 miles or 51,000 miles, which more befits an ultra-luxury car.
But there’s a silver lining to the odometer on this Silver Spirit. The previous owners really got their money’s worth, which is good, because a lot of money was probably spent on this car, between repairs, maintenance and the almost mind-bending depreciation.
Fortunately, depreciation is no longer an issue. You can buy this Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit and drive around in bliss, knowing the most you could possibly lose is $9,995, plus repair costs — which might make that used Camry sound more appealing after all.
