The recently reintroduced Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is awesome, but some Mustang enthusiasts might think that it’s a little much visually. It’s an in-your-face powerhouse that wants everyone to know that it’s no ordinary Mustang. We like a little automotive hyperbole once in a while, but we also appreciate some confident subtlety.
For example, this 1995 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R for sale on Autotrader in like-new condition with only 187 miles on the odometer. With an asking price of $55,000, this Cobra will set you back almost as much money as a brand-new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350. For reference, the original sticker price of this car including destination fees was $37,599, which is $63,680.22 in 2020 money.
Let’s recap what makes the Mustang SVT Cobra R special. It was an even higher-performance version of the Mustang SVT Cobra, which employed a larger 5.8-liter Windsor V8 engine compared to the 5.0-liter engine in the non-R Cobra. The Cobra R made 300 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque, which were pretty impressive numbers for a Mustang in 1995. Each Cobra R was equipped with a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission, upgraded suspension and a more robust cooling system than the regular SVT Cobra. Every 1995 Cobra R had the same color scheme of white exterior paint and a beige interior — a surprisingly bland color palette for such an extreme performance car.
Several weight-saving measures were taken to make the Cobra R even faster and more track-ready. It had no back seat, no radio, no air conditioning, no power windows, no power seats and less sound deadening material. Even the fog lights were removed, not only for weight savings but to create two air ducts that assist in cooling the front brakes.
Only 250 examples of the 1995 Mustang SVT Cobra R were built, and this one is number 40. It has been extremely well-preserved and garage-kept its whole life under a Teflon dust cover. It still has the plastic on the floor mats, and it has all of the original markings on it, including the window sticker. You also get all of the original documentation from the dealer. The seller claims that the only parts of the car that aren’t original from the factory are the battery and an aftermarket aluminum fuel tank. The original fuel tank is also included with the car.
$55,000 for a 25-year-old Mustang that makes less hp than a new EcoBoost Mustang might seem a little steep — and it is — but it might be the most well-preserved example of a 1995 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R you ever see for sale. This would be a great addition for a Ford collector or just anyone who has always wanted one of these and has the means to afford it. Find a Ford Mustang for sale
