Some of my favorite things to find here on Autotrader Find are insanely low-mileage versions of cars that were mostly driven and used. The Mazda Miata is a good example: These were made to be driven, to be enjoyed, to be thrown around on twisty back roads. But this one didn’t live that destiny.
Behold, a 1997 Mazda Miata M Edition that’s covered just 125 miles from new. It’s finished in the "M Edition" green color from 1997, and yes, those chrome wheels are factory originals: Earlier "M Edition" models got multispoke BBS wheels, but the 1997 models apparently had these wheels, which aren’t exactly the most handsome things in the world. Note this car also has its factory hardtop, painted to match the green exterior.
But forget about the exterior for a second and take a look at that interior. Have you ever seen a "NA" Miata that looked this nice inside? Surely not since the early 1990s, when they were new; this one is absolutely mint, as expected from a car with just 125 miles. Look at those seats! They’re pristine!!! And, of course, the dashboard and engine are also perfect and factory original, with the engine looking a lot cleaner than every other NA Miata in existence.
So how does a Miata spend 20 years undriven? I ran the Carfax report to find out, and what I discovered is it was sold new to the first owner in April 1997 with 28 miles, while the second owner bought it in January 1998 with 32 miles. There are then no Carfax events for 11 years, until it had a full service at Santa Cruz Mazda, presumably because it was going to be driven a lot. And, indeed, it was: Between 2009 and 2017, the mileage increased from 32 to 120, suggesting an enormous amount of fun road miles behind the wheel of this little sports car.
If you’re interested in the nicest NA Miata left, this one is at Hayes Auto Sales in Roseville, California, just outside Sacramento, where it’s listed for $29,997. That may seem like a lot, but who knows? It’s not as if there are any other comparable NA Miata models to check that price against. Find a used Mazda MX-5 Miata for sale
