Autotrader Find: 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe With a Corvette ZR1 Engine

Today’s Autotrader Find just might be the ultimate sleeper family vehicle. It’s a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe packing an LS9 supercharged V8, which powered the C6 Corvette ZR1. This is by far the most interesting beige Tahoe on Autotrader.

What is the LS9?

The LS9 was a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that was solely used in the Corvette ZR1 that ran from 2009-2013. The ZR1 was the top performance model of the C6 Corvette and produced insane numbers of 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque. This was achieved by an Eaton four-lobe Roots-type supercharger with a compression ratio of 9.1:1.

Don’t worry, this engine swap didn’t happen on a whim in some guy’s barn. According to the listing, it was professionally performed at a Chevy dealership and many other components have been upgraded so this old Tahoe can handle the power of the LS9. It has a strengthened one-ton 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission, a 35-spline Dana 60 rear end with a Detroit Locker rear differential, upgraded engine cooling, and custom traction bars. Other upgrades include Baer 6-piston brakes and Superlift lowering suspension. And yes, it still has four-wheel drive. You can find more details about the modifications in the Seller Comments of the listing.

As for the body, it appears to be in excellent condition for a ‘98 Tahoe located in the Midwest. The paint and chrome are in good shape with no glaring rust issues. The only exterior modifications are 20-inch GMC alloy wheels and subtle “ZR1” badges on the front doors. The interior is in equally good shape and looks like it’s completely unmodified, which further adds to this truck’s sleeper status.

Worth the Price?

With an asking price of $65,000, this is the most expensive first-generation Chevy Tahoe on Autotrader by a wide margin. However, for the reasons we just covered, the price makes sense. $65k is the lower end of what C6 ZR1 models are going for, and those don’t even have back seats! Chevy never actually made a Tahoe ZR1, but this is as close as you’ll get. Find a Chevrolet Tahoe for sale
