Autotrader Find: 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV for Just $5,499

In the world of cheap electric vehicles, one stands out above all the rest. It’s the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, and you can purchase this one for $5,499. Even though it’s only five years old. And it only has 14,600 miles on the odometer.

Before we get into this specific i-MiEV, let’s talk about the i-MiEV in general. It’s an egg-shaped 4-door hatchback with a fully electric motor that made all of 63 horsepower and delivered a (then-impressive) range figure of 99 miles between charges. The problem is that Mitsubishi severely compromised the i-MiEV’s performance in order to eek out this range figure; the i-MiEV tops out at 80 miles per hour, and it takes around 15 seconds to go from 0 to 60.

This particular i-MiEV is offered by Nissan of Vacaville in Northern California, between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. Yes, it’s offered for just $5,499, and yes, it has just 14,600 miles on it — and no, these prices aren’t out of line for a used i-MiEV. A look at the Carfax report quickly reveals why: This i-MiEV was shipped to the original dealership in March 2012, but it wasn’t sold new until May 2013 — meaning it sat on the lot for 14 months before it finally found a buyer. Needless to say, this doesn’t have the makings of strong resale value. Additionally, it appears that the current dealer, Nissan of Vacaville, has had the car for around seven months.

With that said, the i-MiEV isn’t a bad car for everyone. Although it’s mostly for low-speed driving, it could be a pretty good around-town car for people who want one vehicle they can use to simply drive to the grocery store or run other quick errands. No, it isn’t fast, or especially attractive, but it’s hard to find a cheap electric car for sale that provides 100 miles of range for $5,499. Find a Mitsubishi i-MiEV for sale
