Autotrader Find: Al Unser’s 1987 Chevrolet C3500

Here’s a truck with some curb appeal.  This 1987 Chevrolet C3500 used to belong to Al Unser, and the accomplished racing driver used it to haul horse trailers throughout California.  Now it can be yours.

The Chevrolet C/K Series of trucks preceded the Silverado.  ‘C’ signified a model with two-wheel drive, while ‘K’ signified four-wheel drive.  The C/K Series was around for a long time – the first trucks to bear the name came out for the 1960 model year, while the last were sold for 2000.  Overall, four-generations of GM trucks used the C/K nomenclature.  The one highlighted here hails from the third-generation, which was sold from 1973 through 1991.

This Chevrolet C3500 is a ‘full-ton’ model in a regular-cab, long-bed configuration with dual rear wheels; the perfect set up for towing.  Under the hood is GM’s famous 454 cu in. (or 7.4-liter) ‘big block’ gas V8.  In 1987, this engine would’ve put out 230 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque.  The listing states that this is paired with an automatic transmission; my research tells me that for the 1987 model year, that would’ve been GM’s three-speed ‘3L80’.

The truck comes with some modifications, done not by Mr. Unser, but by the dealership that’s currently offering it for sale.  The truck has been lowered and given a color-matched spray-in bedliner from Line-X.  The paint is original, and the selling-dealer has apparently added the orange-red-brown striping seen in the photos, but the listing mentions that the ‘Unser Arabians’ decals are still visible underneath.

A two-owner California truck, this 1987 Chevrolet C3500 comes with just over 75,000 miles on the odometer, and an asking price of $39,995.  It’s easily one of the best looking old trucks for sale on Autotrader. Those interested can find it at LaFontaine Classic Cars in Milford, MI. Find a Chevrolet C3500 for sale
