Autotrader Find: Low-Mileage 2005 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI

If you’re interested in a rare SUV and you’re looking to tow basically anything you want, here’s your chance. This is a 2005 Volkswagen Touareg equipped with a turbodiesel 10-cylinder engine that makes truly massive torque numbers — and it’s in surprisingly nice shape with relatively low miles, as these things go.

First, the particulars: the Touareg V10 TDI used a 5.0-liter V10 with 349 horsepower, which is a big figure — but the really amazing number was torque, as it stood at 553 lb-ft. That’s a truly amazing number, especially for a mid-2000s luxury SUV, as it’s the kind of torque figure you usually see on heavy-duty pickup trucks. It meant the Touareg V10 TDI could tow an amazing 7,700 pounds, which is just crazy for a midsize luxury SUV. By comparison, the Lexus RX 350 can tow a mere 3,500 pounds.

Of course, the market was (and is) small for the Touareg V10 TDI, and Volkswagen didn’t sell too many of them — so it’s really hard to find a nice one. Fortunately, this is exactly that: a 2005 Touareg V10 TDI with just 79,600 miles, which makes it the lowest-mileage example of the SUV on the market by a wide margin. All the others have well over 100,000 miles — and given that this SUV isn’t exactly known for impressive dependability, the lower mileage the better.

With that in mind, I’d highly recommend a pre-purchase inspection with a qualified mechanic on any Touareg V10 TDI before purchase — but this one looks nicer than others, with a well-kept interior and exterior, and more attractive wheels swapped in from a Porsche Cayenne. It’s offered by Texas Dodge in Amarillo, Texas, for $13,995. Find a Volkswagen Touareg for sale

  1. Not in a million years. Do you realize that you need to remove the engine AND the drivetrain with a special cradle for any difficult engine work? Not many of those cradles around in the US. You may need to send it hundreds of miles for some repairs!
