In the world of highly exciting used vehicles, this one is … well, it isn’t among the most exciting. But those of us who prize weird cars still think it’s cool: It’s a 1991 Buick Reatta Convertible, and it’s listed for sale on Autotrader at Lauterback Buick GMC in rural Newton, Iowa, with just 4,000 miles — for $21,400.
This probably has you wondering: What exactly is a Buick Reatta?
Back in the late 1980s, Buick decided that what its lineup really needed more than anything else was a 2-door, 2-seater car that wasn’t quite a sports car but was still a bit more stylish than the regular crop of Buick sedans. The result was the Reatta, which I hesitate to call a sports car but I also hesitate to call a "GT" car. It was basically just a 2-door coupe or convertible, much in the same vein of, say, the Chrysler Sebring.
Unlike the Sebring, however, the Reatta was practically developed from the ground up. It used an existing engine, like all GM cars, and it used an existing platform — though it had been modified considerably to underpin the Reatta. But everything else was new — the sheet metal wasn’t shared with any other GM vehicle, which was a huge feat at the time. This was a Buick solely for Buick. No other division got this car.
Which would’ve been fine, except for the fact that nobody really wanted it. On sale from 1988 to 1991, the Reatta sold just over 20,000 units before GM pulled the plug, realizing it was never going to take off. Many factors played a role, from the lackluster performance to the high price tag to the unusual level of technology that included one of the very first touchscreen interfaces — maybe the first ever — installed in a car.
The convertible was especially unusual because it didn’t come out until 1990, meaning most Reatta models were coupes. And this one, currently for sale, may just be the nicest convertible left: Finished in Claret Red with a Saddle top and featuring a host of fully working digital gauges, this Reatta has a squeaky clean Carfax report and just 4,000 original miles, along with a new-looking interior and exterior.
