Autotrader Find: smart fortwo With 161,000 Miles

It’s not especially unusual for certain high-mileage drivers to cover 20,000 miles a year. It’s also not especially unusual for certain car owners to choose, for their mode of transportation, a smart fortwo.

It is especially unusual to combine those two things.

And that’s exactly what we have here: a 2008 smart fortwo, currently available at East Coast Auto Group in Jacksonville, Florida, with 161,000 miles. In other words, the person who bought this fortwo decided to drive it 20,000 miles a year consistently for 8 years. This is by far the single highest-mileage smart fortwo currently listed on Autotrader. See the 2008 smart fortwo models for sale near you

Which begs the question: Why would anyone do this? Let’s say you’ve got some job that requires you to travel a lot. Why would you want the smart fortwo to be your travel vehicle of your choice? It’s not a good highway cruiser, it’s not roomy, and fuel economy isn’t anywhere near as good as, say, a Toyota Prius — which, incidentally, isn’t even all that much more expensive!

It’s also worth noting that virtually anyone I’ve ever known with some sort of traveling job has needed a vehicle with storage space so they could place something inside it — luggage, samples of goods they’re selling, or… something! Meanwhile, the smart fortwo has approximately enough cargo room for a single wristwatch and one of those brightly colored pillows shaped like a horseshoe that people bring with them on planes.

Now, I don’t want to go on record here as some sort of smart fortwo hater. In fact, I happen to enjoy the plucky little fortwo. But I think I’d feel a little differently if I was driving the thing 1,700 miles a month.

Nonetheless, this fortwo — which, by the way, is advertised as having "6,000 miles on the replacement motor" — can be yours for a mere $4,900. Maybe you can drive it 160,000 miles more. Find a 2008 smart fortwo for sale

  1. Actually Doug, its a great highway car.  I’ve had a 2009 Smart since it was new (only 115,000 on it now), and I’ve driven many a long (7-9hr) trip in it. Its been VERY reliable mechanically, and it has LOTS of room inside for my and my girlfriend’s suitcases and on those long stretches of highway, cruising at just below the rev-limiter (at 94mph) is a piece of cake – hour after hour.  I did put oversize rims and tires on it (from Discount Tire) and that helped a lot w/cross winds.  I’ll agree with “phoenix00_1979” that the transmission takes getting used to – especially in stop and go traffic, but I often use the paddles and shift manually w/no problems.  Just my opinion of course and you’re welcome to your’s too, but I can think of worse cars to take on a trip – a lot of them.
