Here's something you don't see every day: a 2000 Ford Focus hatchback that isn't a normal 2000 Focus hatchback, but rather a 300-horsepower high-performance model developed by Ford Racing and a company called McLaren Performance Technologies (no, not that McLaren), located in Michigan.

This Focus is called the FR200, and it's a rather exciting vehicle. While we now take for granted that the Ford Focus RS makes well over 300 hp (350, in fact), the early 2000s weren't a good time for hot hatches: Back then, the sportiest Focus (the SVT model) didn't even crack 170 hp. And that's where this thing comes in.

This FR200 is for sale at GR Auto Gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which always has an excellent inventory -- and the story they tell about the car is very interesting. Apparently interested in exploring the limitations of the first-generation Focus platform, Ford Racing and McLaren Performance Technologies teamed up to work on a high-performance Focus. The result was just three Focus FR200 models with 300 hp each; CR Auto Gallery says this particular model was used as a pace car and also did work as a test car, with steel rods for improved durability.

Unfortunately, the FR200 didn't see production -- though, given the appearance, that may not be as bad a thing as you're thinking when you first read about it. Yes, 300 hp sounds good. No, that crazy design isn't for everyone: the flared fenders, the huge aftermarket wing, the flamed paint job, the huge hood scoop, the headlights, the body kit.... It's all a bit much.

Nonetheless, this is probably the coolest Focus to come out of the early 2000s -- and if you want something interesting to complement your Focus RS, this can be yours, with just 4,985 miles for $21,900.
