Autotrader Find: Very Shiny 2016 McLaren 675LT in F1 Chrome

Exotic car brands like to get pretty exotic when it comes to paint. You’ll see bright neon colors on Lamborghinis, bold, daring paint schemes on Porsches, and, on the very rare occasion, a McLaren painted chrome. Chrome seems like it would be a color that you can’t really paint, but McLaren pulled it off, and there’s an example on Autotrader right now in the form of this very shiny 2016 McLaren 675LT in what McLaren calls F1 Chrome.

Why on Earth would anyone paint a car chrome? Like a lot of things about McLaren production cars, the idea for it began with McLaren’s race cars. McLaren had the novel idea of painting its race cars chrome because chrome shows up well on cameras in low-light conditions. That means that when you’re watching a race on TV, the chrome McLaren is going to pop more on your screen. As though the fact that it’s a car with chrome paint weren’t enough to make it noticeable.

McLaren achieved its chrome paint by teaming up with the paint and coating company AkzoNobel, which has developed coatings for everything from cars to airplanes to smartphones. On top of looking cool and unique, this special paint is also especially lightweight and fast-drying.

Now, about the car we see here on Autotrader. It’s a 2016 McLaren 675LT Coupe with 1,864 miles on the odometer and a price tag of just under $700,000. As you can tell by the paint, this isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill 675LT that all of your neighbors drive. This is an MSO HS model. MSO HS stands for McLaren Special Operations High Sport. For these special models, which were limited to 25 units, power was bumped up to 679 horsepower and a whole lot of lightness was added through the liberal use of carbon fiber. Lots of aerodynamic bits and pieces were added to give it 485 pounds of downforce at 150 mph. High sport, indeed.

Because McLaren only built 25 of these things, they built them to each owner’s exact specifications. Well, one of the 25 people who ordered an MSO HS was a madman who wanted a chrome McLaren, and the British supercar firm provided one. So unless multiple people who ordered an MSO HS asked for it in chrome, this is truly a one-of-a-kind car.

If you want the only chrome McLaren in the parking lot at work, grab your checkbook and head to McLaren Newport Beach for this shiny unicorn. Find a McLaren 675LT for sale
