ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION

  • BMW is offering high-performance 135is coupe and convertible models
  • The 135is has extra horsepower and several other upgrades
  • Pricing starts at about $4,000 over the traditional 135i

Sport-minded car shoppers who missed out on BMW’s limited edition 1 Series M last year will soon have the opportunity to get their hands on a new high-performance version of the 1 Series. The automaker recently announced pricing and other details for the upcoming 2013 135is, which offers extra power and several other upgrades over the standard 135i.

For many car shoppers, the most important upgrades to the 135is are under the hood. BMW has massaged the standard 135i’s 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine to produce a muscular 320 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. That’s 20 hp and 17 lb-ft over the standard model and just 15 hp and 15 lb-ft shy of last year’s monstrous 1 Series M. But despite the power upgrades, BMW says the 135is will retain the 135i’s fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission, or 18/25 mpg with the available seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

But the 135is offers more than just extra power. Like the performance-tuned 335is, the 135is will also include a standard sport exhaust, which will likely give the otherwise docile engine note a near-exotic sound. The sporty new model will also feature an enhanced suspension designed to improve handling, unique 18-inch alloy wheels borrowed from the 335is and high-gloss black mirror housings and exterior accents in place of the usual body-color or plastic trim.  Shoppers interested in spirited top-down driving will also be pleased to know that, unlike the coupe-only 1 Series M, the 135is will be available as a coupe or a cabriolet.

BMW is pricing the 135is coupe starting at $44,145 including destination; the convertible version starts at $48,845. Those figures represent an increase of less than $4,000 over the standard 135i, which strikes us as a good deal considering the power boost and added equipment.  If you agree, BMW dealers are prepared to take orders for the new models immediately, with deliveries beginning in the fall.

What it means to you: If you missed out on the 1 Series M, now’s your chance to get a sporty 1 Series for a good price.
