Consumers are getting excited about a host of new compact cars that are charging to the market. So says AutoTrader.com's monthly New Car Insights Report, which also noted increased search activity for luxury vehicles and large trucks throughout September.

According to the report, which examines online automotive marketplace AutoTrader.com's search activity, consumers are most excited by several small cars that recently went on sale. The newly available Hyundai Veloster and Chevrolet Sonic each shot up more than 200 spots among AutoTrader.com's most-searched new vehicles, while Volkswagen's freshly redesigned Beetle climbed 169 positions. Although high gas prices and economic concerns may have caused the popularity jumps, the small cars most likely gained fans by simply presenting buyers with a good all-around package.

"In the past, small cars didn't fare very well with American shoppers, as many of the available options were considered cheap and lacking in features," said Rick Wainschel, AutoTrader.com's vice president of automotive insights. "However, the compacts being produced today like the Veloster and the Sonic are exciting, fun-to-drive and fuel-efficient. Add in some great technology features being offered on these models, and there's a lot more to love about these small cars."

Luxury cars also saw sharp popularity increases in September, with the large Mercedes CL-class coupe making an 82-spot leap, the recently-updated Mercedes C-class gaining 74 spots, the Audi TT climbing 55 positions and the Jaguar XF and Hyundai Equus each scoring 39-spot boosts among the most-searched new cars. While it's hard to say why luxury cars saw such a jump, the sharp increases could signal an economy that finally has wealthier buyers ready to spend more money.

But while compact and luxury cars were gaining ground among September new vehicle searches, pickup trucks remained among the site's most-searched vehicles overall. Ford's F-150 topped the list of AutoTrader.com's most-searched new vehicles, while the Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram also made the top ten. Other leading vehicles included the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Jeep Wrangler and Chevrolet Corvette.
