For most, the Grim Reaper conjures up images of a dark and scary character, evoking fear in the hearts of even the manliest of men. Now swap out the word “Grim” with “Chevrolet” and the result remains the same. The new 2014 Chevrolet Reaper is a monster intended to haunt the dreams of truck enthusiasts everywhere. Especially those who drive Ford’s F-150 Raptor.
Developed by Lingenfelter Performance, the Chevrolet Reaper is a souped-up, supercharged Silverado short-bed pickup with a seriously aggressive exterior graphic scheme and a custom-designed interior. Other purposeful modifications include a unique hood and grille that give this truck a more menacing front view. The Reaper also comes with a higher bumper, front skid plate and rock guards, all to help persevere extreme off-road mayhem.
For power, the Reaper is propelled by one of two up-rated Silverado engines: a 475-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 or a 550-hp 6.2-liter V8. Add to the equation a sport exhaust system and a performance suspension that has been raised a full three inches for greater clearance and wheel travel. The Reaper rolls on 20-inch wheels wearing huge 33-in General Grabber off-road tires.
In recent times, Ford’s F-150 Raptor has been the only high-speed off-road pickup truck. With a performance edge thanks to 411 hp, nothing came even close to the Raptor. But all of that changes now with the introduction of the Reaper. Is the Chevrolet Reaper a Raptor-killer? It appears to be. But whether the Reaper will deliver the same smooth on-road driving experience that the Raptor has become known for is yet to be seen.
The last time Chevrolet rolled out a full-size hot rod pickup was in the early 1990s with the high-performance 454 SS. Based on the C1500 truck, the 454 SS donned an enormous 7.4-liter V8 engine mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. Output was a then-impressive 230 hp.
Pricing has not yet been announced, but the Chevrolet Reaper is expected to begin arriving in dealerships by March.
What it means to you: Truck fans now have another option in the high-performance pickup arena. Whether they want to race in a desert rally or drive to work in a fearsome beast, the Reaper will satisfy either desire.
